The #MuteKanye Movement Has Officially Begun

Earlier this week, #TimesUp released a statement about muting R.Kelly and taking him off the airwaves, following a string of sexual assault allegations levied against the singer. Now, two Detroit radio hosts are taking Kanye West off of the airwaves, and it’s for a good reason.

On May 2nd, Kanye appeared on TMZ live and said “When you hear about slavery for 400 years … For 400 years? That sounds like a choice.” It was a trending topic on Twitter on Tuesday with #SlaveryWasAChoice.

Radio hosts in Detroit, BiGG & Shay Shay, declared that they won’t be playing any of his music on the airwaves, thus making #MuteKanye a thing. In a Facebook post on Thursday, from the 105.1 Morning Bounce explained:

We feel like Kanye has gone too far with his latest statement declaring that “slavery was a choice.” We are over it. We don’t want to hear Kanye’s music, we don’t want to play Kanye on our show, we don’t want to talk about Kanye anymore. So we are taking a stand and we aren’t playing his music anymore; we just are refusing to give him a platform.

Rapper Eve said that she was done with Kanye West and urged everyone to listen to J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar instead of Kanye West. A Care2 petition demanded Adidas end their collaboration with him and a separate Change.org one suggested a boycott Kanye altogether.  The Care2 petition is close now, but it had 370 supporters while The People vs. Kanye: Boycott Kanye West has 580 signatures and it needs 1,000.

During the Thursday morning radio show, Shay Shay also called West “reckless” for saying icons like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are “too far in the past and not relatable.”

The Detroit hip-hop station is not alone.

On Wednesday, New York City radio host Ebro Darden appeared on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon to discuss West’s comments, where Lemon said the rapper “doesn’t know history.”

The next morning, Hot 97, where Darden’s show airs tweeted this:

“He’s refused to take his meds, and that’s where he’s been, for the last couple of weeks leading into last week, so almost a month now that it’s been,” a source close to the family said. “It’s sad.”

Many know that you need to take your medication as prescribed daily or they will not do their job and won’t help with mental health. A closer source to the Kardashian family has already made a statement regarding his mental health:

As you can recall, Kanye had to cancel his Saint Pablo tour back in ’16  due to a breakdown and exhaustion, and he was later hospitalization. The first source even told People:

“No person who is truly mentally stable would dispute something that’s historically true and proven. It’s no different than people in the past who’ve questioned the Holocaust.”
