‘American Idol’ Returning For Season 2, Does Anyone Care?

American Idol is returning for a second season on ABC, but does anyone really care about the show, its contestants or the judges?

After a season where it seems fans aren’t as invested in the former Fox hit, AI has been given the green light for a second go-around.

Returning will be judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie as well as host Ryan Seacrest, who will also continue his radio show as well as host duties on Live with Kelly and Ryan.

Deadline reported that the show “has not been a runaway ratings hit in its return.”

In fact, ratings for the franchise were at an all-time low, according to Deadline, after its premiere and throughout the season.

AI has only recently rebounded in the ratings with the start of its live shows.

The season has seemed almost gentle in its approach to nurturing the contestants.

Despite some one-liners from Katy, there is real viewer nostalgia for the zippy zingers of former judge Simon Cowell.

Remember when contestants feared critique from the panel? How performers were worried what Simon, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. or Keith Urban would say about their performances?

What’s missing from this season is real drama and interaction between the judges and contestants.

Deadline reported that the show is on track to finish as Sunday’s No. 1 entertainment broadcast series.

“We knew that American Idol on ABC would unleash an opportunity for singers from all walks of life to realize their dreams and that these incredible contestants would have America rooting for their success,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment.

“I am thrilled that Katy, Luke, Lionel, and Ryan will be back to once again embark on this Idol journey with us to discover the next crop of inspiring talent.”

The top 7 finalists take the stage this Sunday on ABC’s American Idol.
