Ariana Grande Opened Up About Her Anxiety & Why Her Fans Simply Get It

Ariana Grande is gearing up for the release of her fourth studio album, Sweetener. Grande has already solidified herself as a pop force and chart-topping artist, but her fourth album is going to be vastly different than the others she has released. It’s her first album since the Manchester bombing that took place at her concert last year.

In her Fader cover story, Grande talked about how she let down her emotional guards on this album.

“I’ve always just been like a shiny, singing, 5-6-7-8, sexy-dance…sexy thing. But now it’s like, ‘OK … issa bop — but issa message,'” Grande told Fader. “‘Issa bop but also has chunks of my soul in it. Here you go. Also, I cried 10 hundred times in the session writing it for you. Here is my bleeding heart, and here is a trap beat behind it.’ There’s definitely some crying-on-the-dancefloor stuff on this one.”

Grande feels like now more than ever is her time to put some real emotion behind her songs. A driving force for her to let her guard down on her music is that her fans are on the same page as her.

“The thing that makes me feel OK with opening up and finally allowing myself to be vulnerable is that I know [my fans] feel the same feelings,” she says. “I’ve talked to them about it.”

Grande then explained that she has some fans who have become friends. They text all the time and she even plays them songs before her label hears them. A song she played for her new fan-friends is “Get Well Soon.” The song is about Grande having an anxiety attack, she wrote the song right after she had her first one.

“They were like, ‘Thank you,’ when they heard that one,” Grande said. “It was so scary to do that, but to see them be like, ‘I get it, I feel that too’…”

Grande shared a snippet of “Get Well Soon” on her Instagram on New Year’s Eve.

She even cut songs from her tracklist for being too emotional, but then ultimately added them back. Bringing her once 10 song tracklist up to 15. “There are parts of my life that [my fans] would love to know about,” she says, “and hard times that I have been dealing with for the past year-and-a-half that they deserve to know about because they love me endlessly and care. I don’t want to hide any pain from them because I can relate to their pain. Why not be in it together?”

Sounds like Grande is going to be pouring her heart out on Sweetener.
