On the red carpet of the 2018 Tony Awards, Tina Fey was approached by a journalist from Entertainment Tonight who questioned whether a 30 Rock reboot is in the works. Although Fey stated that no plans have been made regarding her show, which ran on NBC from 2006 to 2013, she did pitch a creative idea that would bring back not only 30 Rock, but also another beloved sitcom.
“Amy [Poehler]’s willing to do a Parks & Rec reboot,” said Fey. “Maybe we should just do a Liz Lemon, Leslie Knope spinoff.”
Oh. My. Goodness. This is what fans everywhere have been waiting for. This spin-off would be incredible on so many levels. Liz Lemon and Leslie Knope are two wonderful women who have enough in common that the idea of them being friends is believable. Both women are hardworking, driven, quirky and a little geeky, albeit in ways different enough that the characters certainly wouldn’t blend together. A crossover series would draw in fans from both 30 Rock and Parks & Recreation, so there is undoubtedly an audience for a reboot. The original shows are similar enough in tone–both highlight situations surrounding the workplace in a comedic light–that with a sharp script, combining them should be seamless. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have already developed a strong professional relationship by working on Saturday Night Live together, as well as a strong personal friendship so this reboot could be TV gold.
How likely is this proposal of Fey’s?
It’s a little too early to tell, but this idea is far from being shut down. When appearing on The Tonight Show, Tina Fey expressed to Jimmy Fallon that she was not interested in creating a “straight up” revival of 30 Rock that involved returning to the characters in their same exact situation a few years down the line from the finale.
However, combining the world of Liz Lemon with the world of Leslie Knope would break from the traditional path that TV revivals have been following recently and would allow her the opportunity to work with new people, so a crossover is something she is willing to explore. Other members of the 30 Rock cast are also supportive of bringing back the show in any capacity that NBC will agree to. Jane Krakowski, in particular, is a huge advocate for a new set of episodes; she says, “I know it’s something the fans would love and we would love.”
On the Parks & Rec side of things, it seems that if lining up everyone’s schedules were possible, the cast would be down to have a reunion. Amy Poehler has expressed that she would love for the group to come together again someday and other cast members have agreed. Chris Pratt recently Tweeted about how much joy playing Andy Dwyer brought him. Other actors–including Adam Scott, Retta, and Ben Schwartz–feel similarly about their time on the show. In addition to talking about his wish to return to the role of Ron Swanson, Nick Offerman claimed that the show will return if Beyoncé agrees to be the mayor of Pawnee. Come on, Beyoncé! Where are you at?
While no concrete plans are in the works at this point, members from both casts are receptive to the idea of a reboot and honestly, bringing these two shows together would create a work of art. The comedic brilliance of Fey and Poehler, combined with the talents of their former co-workers, has the potential to play out wonderfully.
Tina Fey, if you’re reading this, I’d like to beg you in advance for a staff writer position on this reboot. Thank you.
