One of the best activities to do on Father’s Day is to watch a family movie. Fortunately for dads and daughters alike, there are many movies that center on sincere, genuine parent-child relationships.
Although the father-daughter relationships in films are sometimes rocky, they try to reflect what the relationship dynamics are like in real life. Let’s take a look at the most relatable, touching father-daughter relationships portrayed in movies.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
This delightful dramedy stars Greg Kinnear and Abigail Breslin as father and daughter. Kinnear’s character is a “stage dad,” forcing Breslin’s character into beauty pageants at a young age. While their relationship starts off on a shaky note, they eventually come to understand each other towards the end of the film.
After Breslin’s character gets laughed off the stage at the pageant, Kinnear’s character fervently defends her and begins to rethink his previous attitude towards her.
Although the movie is primarily about Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway’s journey through space, a central relationship is the one between McConaughey and his daughter Murph (played by Mackenzie Foy, Jessica Chastain, and Ellen Burstyn at different points in the film).
McConaughey attempts to travel through space to save humanity in an inhabitable dystopia but to do so, he must forsake time with Murph. Even though they are separated for most of the film, he always tries to return to her and ultimately does in the end.
This movie stars Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana as a father-daughter duo who lives in the woods. Bana trains Ronan to become an assassin. But importantly, he doesn’t just teach her fighting skills, he also instructs her about art and music, ensuring that she’s well-rounded.
Lady Bird (2017)
Another Saoirse Ronan film that had to make the list is Lady Bird. While the film primarily revolves around the relationship between Ronan and her mother, played by Laurie Metcalf, the father-daughter relationship between Ronan and Tracy Letts is integral as well.
As Ronan and Metcalf struggle to get along, Letts often serves as a mediator, helping and supporting Ronan anyway that he can. He may not be the best father figure and he may make mistakes over the course of the movie, but his flaws, as well as Ronan’s, are what make Lady Bird so realistic and sincere.
The Descendants (2011)
When George Clooney’s wife is in a coma, he has to mend the broken relationships he has with his two daughters, played by Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller. His relationship with Woodley is especially notable as, throughout the film, they work towards improving their connection by communicating frankly and openly about all of the issues that beset them.
The Parent Trap (1998)
Lindsay Lohan’s first film role was not only important for skyrocketing her career, but also for demonstrating a great father-daughter relationship. Lohan plays two twin sisters, one of whom is related to the daughter of Dennis Quaid’s character.
Quaid is always supportive and inclusive of both of Lohan’s characters and although he makes some bad decisions, he listens to his daughters and redeems himself when it really matters.
Movies can be a great reflection of the father-daughter relationships that families encounter in real life. Make sure you recommend a movie to your dad this Father’s Day!
