Demi Lovato always keeps it real when it comes to her sobriety. It was a focal point in her YouTube documentary Simply Complicated. The 25-year-old celebrated being sober for six years in March 2018. Lovato dropped a surprise single, “Sober” today and it hints that she has broken her sobriety streak.
The song starts off with Lovato singing that she has “no excuses” and “dying inside.” Then she sings about having the shakes and cold sweats, similar to when someone is detoxing from drugs or alcohol.
Then she croons about always wanting to cave when she’s lonely. Then in the chorus, she announces she broke her sobriety.
“Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore / And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor / To the ones who never left me / We’ve been down this road before / I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.”
Lovato makes it clear that she is talking about recently, or currently, breaking her sobriety and not about her first fall into substance abuse. In Simply Complicated Lovato said she was doing coke, taking pills like Adderall and drinking excessively.
“My first time doing coke, I was 17 working on Disney Channel, and I was with a couple of friends and they introduced me to it,” Lovato explained. “I was scared because my mom always told me that your heart could just burst if you do it. But I did it anyways and I loved it. I felt out of control with the coke the first time that I did it.”
Most notably when she wasn’t sober the first time around she punched one of her backup dancers in 2010. In Simply Complicated she said that she thought the dancer ratted on her for being on Adderall. This incident caused her to enter rehab.
It’s unclear what Lovato did to break her sobriety. She sings about spilling drinks hinting that she drank alcohol, but nothing has been confirmed. The single is super emotional and a must listen. We hope Lovato is getting the help she needs, it couldn’t have been easy to drop a song like this.
