Shailene Woodely Explains Her 350 Calorie Diet For ‘Adrift’

Shailene Woodley committed to her leading role in Adrift in a big way. The actress played real-life sea woman Tami Oldham Ashcraft, who was stranded at sea. To imitate Ashcraft’s starved body Woodley only consumed 350 calories a day in the final weeks of filming.

“For the last two weeks I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day — 350 calories. It was f**king miserable,” she told The Times.

Adrift is based on Ashcraft’s real-life experience, which she wrote about in Red Sky In Mourning: A True Story Of Lve, Loss, and Survival At Sea. In 1983 Ashcraft and her boyfriend Richard Sharp sailed from Tahiti to San Diego. The experienced sailors encountered Hurricane Raymond. Their boat was wrecked and Ashcraft navigated the wrecked ship for over 1,500 miles until she ended up in Hawaii.

She survived the 42-day ordeal on canned food and peanut butter. She was starved, injured and managed to sail a wrecked ship to shore. Woodley needed to recreate that same starved body, which explains her intense calorie deficit diet.

Woodley said her intense hunger also affected her sleep schedule. “I can’t sleep when I’m hungry,” she revealed. “So I would have a glass of wine to basically pass the f**k out.”

Adrift stays pretty close to Ashcraft’s retelling of the situation. There are a few twists and turns, but they were all approved by Ashcraft. She worked closely on the film and worked with the screenwriters for five years.

“I’ve waited many years for fruition, to see my story on the big screen,” Ashcraft told Red Carpet Crash.

It’s more than likely that Woodley has doctor’s approval and checkups while purposely starving herself.
