I’ve always been a fan of ice cream sandwiches. I love walking up to an ice cream truck–bonus points if they’re playing one of those little jingles–and buying a Chipwich to eat on the beach. Therefore I was pleased to learn that this summer, New York City is stepping up its dessert game with the beer-infused ’76er ice cream sandwich. The sandwich is filled with ice cream that is infused with Samuel Adam’s new beer, Sam ’76. which has a 4.7% APV when consumed on its own.

If you’re an expert on beer, this drink is brewed with Cascade, Citra, Mosiac, and Simcoe. If you don’t, then all you need to know is that it tastes like ale when you first take a sip but then feels more closely resembles a lager once you’re swallowing. If that still doesn’t mean anything to you, the beer tastes good and you should just go try it, okay?

Never fear if you are not the biggest beer fan or if you’re an underage student with an unreliable fake ID: you can still buy the ’76er ice cream sandwich! During the process of making the ice cream, the flavor of the beer and the alcohol percentage decreases, so while you’ll get a hint of Sam ’76, it won’t be overwhelming. This ice cream is a way to enjoy a refreshing beer without dealing with a wicked hangover, which sounds good to me. Though they are not beer-infused, the peanut butter cookies holding the ’76er ice cream sandwich together are still absolutely incredible. Have I convinced you to leave work and buy one yet?

You can find the ice cream sandwich on the Lower East Side at Melt Bakery, which was created in 2010 by pastry chef Julian Plyter and “idea guy trained in finance” Kareem Hamady. It self-identifies as “New York’s first Ice Cream Sandwich store” and provides a variety of unique options for any ice cream enthusiast to munch on. If you just want a little snack and you’re hesitant to commit to a whole ice cream sandwich–although personally, I don’t know why you would be–the shop also sells mini ice cream sandwiches. So cute! But if you specifically want to try the ’76er ice cream sandwich, make sure you get there by August 2, because this special is only available until then. (Maybe get there a few days earlier than that, because August 2 is ice cream sandwich day, so you better believe that place is going to be packed.)

A couple of weeks ago, this tasty treat wouldn’t have even been legal in NYC; while the sale of wine ice cream has been permitted for a decade, Governor Andrew Cuomo just modified that law to include beer and hard cider ice creams on July 10. With this new freedom in place, it seems that every New Yorker wants to satisfy their sweet tooth with some boozy ice cream and the snack above does not disappoint–but if you’re more of a rosé gal, check out Angry Orchard Rosé Ice Cream as a delectable alternative.

Cheers to good food and good alcohol, especially when they’re together!
