The internet can end your career in seconds. You think Doja Cat, a singer who began gaining popularity thanks to her viral song “Mooo!“, would know that.

Fans went through old tweets of Doja’s and found that she used the homophobic slur f****t in a few tweets in 2015. They tweeted at the singer asking her to explain herself, and she just replied, “Lmfaooooooo.”

People got upset at Doja’s initial response and use of the slur. Using homophobic rhetoric is never okay, but especially so in light of the 9-year-old boy, Jamel Myles, who committed suicide after her classmates bullied him for being gay.

Instead of apologizing for her use of the word, Doja decided to defend herself by using the word again. On August 28 at 8:16 P.M. she tweeted:

“I called a couple people f****ts when I was in high school in 2015 does this mean I don’t deserve support? I’ve said f****t roughly like 14 thousand times in my life. Does saying f****t mean you hate gay people? Do i hate gay people? I don’t think I hate gay people. Gay is ok.”

She deleted the tweet after she began receiving immense backlash.

The biggest shock is when celebrity and actress Debra Messing came for Doja. She screenshot Doja’s first apology and gave the singer her own thoughts about it.

“SERIOUSLY, @DojaCat?! How can you be so ignorant?” She wrote. “Do know how many people you are hurting? Use your fame and platform for Good. It’s a privilege.”

She then went on to defend her reaction of Doja using the homophobic slur. People tweeted at her to get over it and that it happened in her past. Messing was quick to point out that her apology was recent and even so, 2015 isn’t that long ago.

According to Pop Crave, Doja deleted her first apology and posted a second one less than an hour later at 7:05 P.M. She wrote:

“I’ve used horrible derogatory and hateful words towards people out of ignorance. I just want you guys to know that you’re incredibly special and I hold you dearly to my heart. I’m sorry for anyone I’ve offended or hurt deeply. You all are worth of love and support. No one deserves to be discriminated against for their race, religion, or sexual orientation in any angle or sense. I don’t want you to look at me as a roll [sic] model. I just want you to hear my music and the joy that you take from that is the most important part. I love making music with you. Thank you for everything to this day.”

She’s essentially asking for forgiveness and to separate the artist from the art, something America regularly does with men. But unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Doja will be getting a free pass. People are still dragging her over her first apology.

Doja then posted a third apology which she had since deleted as well. Her last apology reads:

“I apologize for the derogatory terms I’ve used in the past and no one should be discriminated against for their race, religion, or sexual orientation I love you and I hope to make more great music with and for you in the future. Thank you.”

This is all too much and needs to be counterbalanced with some tweets.
