Scooter Braun famously manages Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and sometimes Kanye West. Managing these three stars can’t be an easy task and Braun spilled some tea about this clients while at a talking engagement on October 23. Braun was speaking at the Fast Company’s Innovation Festival in New York City on Tuesday and he had lots to say about the one time Grande fired him and her “s***ty” ex-boyfriend.

“But I watched this other manager get fired, and I saw him defend himself instantly and put out a lot of truths,” Braun said. “And I watched the artists see those truths, not want to deal with it, and then forever hate that manager.”

Braun continued, “And with Ariana, I could have said a lot of stuff, and in fact my team wanted me to, because they were pissed, but I said ‘We’re not gonna say a word, and this is gonna come back around.’ They were like, ‘Never take her back!,’ but I just said, ‘Let’s stay quiet and let our truth be our actions.”

The reason why Braun and Grande started working together again was that she dumped her boyfriend at the time.

“And when s***ty boyfriends leave (laughter), she starts to see the light on some stuff, and one day I got a phone call. She said, ‘Can I see you tomorrow?,’ and I said, ‘No, I’m busy’ (laughter) – I actually couldn’t so I said ‘I could see you Thursday’ or whatever and I went over there and we have a very honest conversation.”

According to Us Weekly, Braun and Grande parted ways in February 2016. Grande rehired Braun in September of that same year. As for the “s***ty” ex-boyfriend, it’s most likely Ricky Alvarez.

Grande and Big Sean broke up in April 2015 after dating for eight months. Soon after, Grande began dating her backup dancer Alvarez. They kissed on stage during her 2015 PRIDE performance and was with Grande during the donut shop incident in July 2015. The couple broke up in July 2016. Grande began dating Mac Miller in August 2016 and it’s doubtful Braun would have referred to the late rapper as “s***ty.”

Braun credits getting fired and their “honest conversation” afterward to what has made the duo so strong. This prepared the two for the Manchester attack that would occur a year later.
