Ariana Grande has dethroned Selena Gomez and is now the new queen of Instagram. Grande is now the most followed female on the platform, the second most followed celebrity and the third most followed account.

Currently Grande has over 146,390,000 followers and Gomez has a mere 146,303,000 followers.

Gomez at one point was the most followed celebrity on the platform from 2016 until October 2018. But ever since Gomez has stepped away from Instagram because of her mental health her follower count just can’t compete.
In October 2018 Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Gomez as the most followed celebrity on the platform. At the time Gomez was inactive on Instagram for over a month.
Gomez announced on September 23, 2018, that she was taking a break from social media and specifically Instagram.
“Update: taking a social media break. Again,” she wrote. “As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.”

In her Elle cover story that came out that same month, Gomez revealed that she doesn’t even have the password to her Instagram account.
“I’m not on the internet,” Gomez said. “I haven’t been on the internet in months. I don’t have my password for Instagram.”
A few weeks later at the beginning of October, Gomez was reportedly suffering from an emotional breakdown and was hospitalized. Since the new year, Gomez has only posted on Instagram five times.
Grande takes periodic breaks from social media, but typically she’s posting daily. In 2019 alone, Grande has already posted well over 130 times on her account and it’s not even March.
