Berlin truly is a unique capital city. Its history and heritage are entwined in its outlook and culture and there really isn’t a comparable city in Europe or the rest of the world.
Visitors fall in love with it at first sight and often make repeated trips back – there’s simply so much to see and do (not to mention eat and drink), that it’s impossible to do it justice with one simple vacation.
Despite years of historic struggle, the atmosphere there is dramatically different now. Laid back, chilled, and ultra cool. There’s superb nightlife if that’s your thing, multi-national cuisines (with a strong Turkish bent) and so much to do in terms of historical sightseeing and museum trips you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Here’s why Berlin is the place to go in Spring 2024.
Where to stay in Berlin in 2024
Which are the main go-to areas to stay in while you’re there? Here is a list of some of the main and most well-known neighborhoods there – making it easy to find lots of things to do in Berlin.
Firstly, there’s Mitte. This is known as the city’s historical center. It’s also the place that was the main hub of East Berlin. Here is the area where you’ll find the best museums, galleries and indeed nightclubs.
Next is Neukolln which is known as Berlin’s coolest and trendiest modern neighborhood. Its main attraction is bars – and these are all centered around Weser Strasse and Sonnenallee.
Thirdly is the area known as Kreuzberg. Again, this is chock full of cool bars, and street art and is well known for its international eating options. Here, you’ll view an abandoned theme park in all its faded glory, and look at the huge memorial to the Soviet Union – simply by walking through Treptower Park.
Lastly, we come to Prenzlauer Berg. This is just to the northeast of Mitte and this is the place where Berlin really began to sew the seeds of regeneration. It’s full of relaxed cafes and places to hang out with your family.
What to do in Berlin in Spring 2024
Let’s now take a look at some of the things to do and see in Berlin this year. Firstly, culture – and some of the outstanding museums to visit.
Museum in der Kulturbrauerei: This is a free museum all about the everyday lives of people in East Germany – though not solely focussed on the wall. This gives a view of what people’s lives were like during the Cold War and is well worth a trip. The Berlin Wall Memorial & Documentation Centre: This is probably the best place to start to understand what happened to Berlin. This free open-air museum will help you learn all about the Berlin Wall. It’s got the best overall information on the wall and the history of the whole city.
The German Resistance Museum: In the heart of Germany’s WWII military headquarters, the Wehrmacht you’ll find this fascinating museum. It uncovers the stories of people who stood up to Hitler and the Nazi regime to great personal cost.
The Neues Museum: This stunning place is home to Berlin’s Egyptian collection, which houses the famous bust of the iconic Queen Nefertiti. It’s an absolutely outstanding museum to while a few hours away and learn about a different culture.
Deutsches Historisches Museum: Last but by no means least on this non-exhaustive list is the German History Museum. You may have to plan ahead as the building is having some renovation work at present, but there are some outstanding temporary exhibitions to view. The Berlin Wall
There isn’t a lot of the Berlin Wall to see anymore, but there are still sections down by the Spree at the Oberbaum Bridge that are covered in bright graffiti.
It’s almost impossible to believe that this impressive city was split into two, but the remaining sections of the wall are a strong reminder that it was a time of great divide – that ultimately resulted in a reunified country.
Take a look at the Tiergarten, right in the center of town, and wander to the Reichstag, Germany’s infamous parliament building, too.
Clubs and bars in BerlinAll that history and culture is thirsty work. Have a chilled-out evening in some of the very best clubs and bars in Berlin. Here are just a few from the very extensive list. It’s true to say that Berlin’s nightlife is heady and exotic, and an intense experience for some – they won’t be for all, so there is some balance provided with quieter spots to have a cozy drink or two with a loved one instead.
Monarch Bar: Hidden away behind a nondescript white door covered in graffiti, the Monarch is a chilled-out place to have a drink or two, relax, and have fun.
Filmkunstbar Fitzcarraldo: Named after the complicated film by Werner Herzog, this lovely little place also houses a DVD rental shop, too. A perfect place for a drink and lots of film chatter.
SO36: For the clubbers amongst you, this is a Kreuzberg institution. Whilst it’s known for its clubbing – it’s also a concert venue, at which the late David Bowie and Iggy Pop played in the 1970s.
Monster Ronson’s Ichiban Karaoke: Fancy a spot of karaoke? Monster Ronsons is the place to get a few drinks and have a rousing sing-along with your friends.
