Watch Russia's Police Choir Sing Some Daft Punk

In an effort designed to appeal to the world and the cultures embedded in each country, the Sochi Olympics chose the most popular song in the world as a landmark moment during Friday’s opening ceremonies at the 2014 Olympics.  “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk (of France) featuring Pharrell Williams (of the United States) was the song that echoed throughout Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi. While it wouldn’t be my first pick of song, I definitely enjoyed it. Just to see some straight-laced, probably very scary men sing some present-day, “hip” jams was something to giggle about.

And it’s nice to see Russia make an effort to say, “Hey, we’re not so bad. See! Our law enforcers can laugh at themselves.” This year’s hype and hate and backlash in regards to the Olympics has been a little overwhelming and in all honesty, has turned me off to watching. And as a person who loves the Olympic games, that’s disheartening.
When Russia pulled this our of their hats, I couldn’t help but smile. It’s a nice comedic, light-hearted relief to this intense and controversial year of winter games. I hope that we see more of this kind of entertainment during the closing ceremonies.
