In my eyes, Gwen Stefani can do no wrong… but that doesn’t mean I agree with every move she makes. Let’s be honest, those Harajuku girls weren’t a great choice. That black chunk of hair she’s been rocking lately reminds me of a middle school Manic Panic project gone wrong. I even forgave her for for her frozen face during The Voice — that’s how much I love Gwen. She rocks those perfect, old school glamour red lips even when she’s grocery shopping, her adorable nuggets look like they could be in a crazy cool alternative band, and “Tragic Kingdom” summed up all of my feelings — she’s everything.
“Baby Don’t Lie,” is Gwen’s first new solo song in eight years. I guess she’s been a little bit busy birthing three perfect children while still looking better than I ever will. Just because “Baby Don’t Lie” isn’t emotional and heart wrenching like “Don’t Speak” doesn’t mean it won’t be on every pregame playlist I’m going to make this winter. No matter what you think of Gwen, if you’re not moving to this music something’s seriously wrong with your hips. She worked with producers Benny Blanco (he’s helped create your favorite songs from Ke$ha, Iggy Azalea, Ariana Grande, and Maroon 5), Ryan Tedder (of One Republic), and Noel Zancanella (he’s worked with Ellie Goulding and One Republic). With the chorus “Baby don’t lie,” you can’t help but wonder if she’s talking to her painfully handsome hubby, who’s rumored to have been cheating on her pretty much forever. If you’re looking to see the video, there’s going to be a sneak peek tonight during The Voice, and the full video premieres Tuesday via Vevo.
Unfortunately, in recent years Gwen has gone a little rogue. While No Doubt created music that was catchy and relatable, her solo songs (and even No Doubt’s Push and Shove), lack the intensity and creativity of old school ND… but just because her new music is more pop than ska and more Shakira than Save Ferris doesn’t mean I’ll ever give up on her completely. Gwen used to be one of the most original artists out there, and now she’s painfully on trend. I may be disappointed, but I’ll still listen, and dance.
