This Aurora Shooting Survivor's Proposal Will Restore Your Faith in Humanity

Every time I hear about another douchebag dude and a couple that legitimately met on Tinder, I start to believe a little bit less in love. I grew up watching Disney princesses find their happily ever after fairy tale endings, but real life (and by real life, I mostly mean college), taught me that love isn’t always exactly the beautiful journey it’s made out to be. Then, something comes around that makes me think that every guy in the universe might not be the worst human being in the world.
Max met Bonnie Kate when she was 16 and he was 21, which sounds like a scandal worthy of a Lifetime movie. They started dating once she turned 18, but broke up because the age difference was still an issue, and she felt like he was getting serious too fast. For their first date, he planned an elaborate scavenger hunt that ended with a Pride and Prejudice viewing. While that could be wildly romantic, it could also be seriously overwhelming if you’re just not ready. Bonnie Kate broke up with him when she went on a mission trip to Haiti.
In 2012, Bonnie Kate went on a road trip that changed everything. She and a friend were driving through Colorado. Out of the blue, they decided to stop in Aurora to see a movie. It was The Dark Knight Rises. Bonnie Kate was shot in the knee, and unable to walk, with years of recovery ahead of her. During her recovery, he was by her side the entire time. Max proposed on film because he wanted to make the movie theatre a happy place for her again. Bonnie Kate and Max were married on May 24th, and now they’re living in Baton Rouge together.
There are so many proposals online that are “the best proposal EVER!” but I’m pretty convinced that this one might actually be. The other proposals are elaborate viral schemes that seem way too cheesy for me. This proposal alone wasn’t even my favorite thing– it’s just the way he talks about her, which is so romantic it’s unreal (okay, I might be tearing up right now).
