Another week, another Last Week Tonight with John Oliver segment with a slightly too long rant on an obviously ridiculous subject. This time, the topic is sex ed. I’m sure we all have vivid memories of sex ed classes, except me – #CatholicSchoolGirlProblems. I can’t remember if we just never talked about it or I suppressed such an awkward time in my life.
Without question, this country needs to figure out how to address sex ed. Many schools provide sex-ed programs that put the pressure on girls to say no to sex, without teaching boys about consent. That message can harm young girls, especially survivors of sexual assault, who are being told they’re not worthy of relationships. Certain states restrict what schools can teach about sex while others focus on abstinence-only education, which is proven not to work.
In case any viewers didn’t get the sex ed they needed in school, Oliver recruited Laverne Cox, Kristen Schaal, Kumail Nanjiani, Aisha Tyler, Jack McBrayer, and married couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman to offer some priceless advice. The gems start with Nick Offerman saying, “If you call it a ‘hoo-hah,’ you’re not ready for sex.” And it just gets better from there.
