Kathryn Thompson wasn’t just an employee that handed Elon University students their daily caffeine boost at the Acorn Coffee Shop – she’s more like a friend to the hundreds who know her.
After years of caring for students, Elon wanted to give something back.
Students Lucy Smith-Williams and Taylor Zisholtz decided to start the movement, asking students to donate just $1 each on a GoFundMe page. The end goal was to raise enough money to send Thompson and her family to Disney World.
Zisholtz told Elon Local News,
I really took to her warmth. She was very invested in where we were from, what we were doing, and when she said ‘it’s my dream,’ I thought, ‘well there’s 6,000 people here with at least a dollar. We could probably make this happen.’
The students have already surpassed their goal of $6,500 in just three weeks. Watch the heartwarming moment when they surprised Thompson with the vacation in the video above.
