If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the Internet in my years of working as a digital writer, it’s this: There’s really no better way to ruin your day than by reading the comments section on, well, anything.
People say the most awful things in the comments: From deeply racist generalizations to awful sexist statements flung directly at the person posting the story/video/photo, I’ve seen them all. And then of course there’s that terrible thing that happens when commenters wage all-out wars with one another for absolutely no reason. It gets really, really bad sometimes – complete with nasty remarks about the other person’s looks, weight, race, whatever. Sometimes it even goes into “you should really go kill yourself territory,” which is so, so, so not okay.
Jaclyn Hill, a super successful YouTube guru, made a video about this exact topic and it’s so worth a watch. It’s no refreshing to see someone take on hate so directly – and with all the crap that’s happening in the world right now, it’s exactly the sort of thing you need to watch in order to see how deeply something as simple as an Internet comment can affect someone’s life.
See the whole thing right here.
