If you don’t know who Shonda Rhimes is, that’s okay because you’ve probably watched one of her many TV shows. Rhimes is creator and writer of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Private Practice and executive producer of How To Get Away With Murder. She also wrote Crossroads, the movie with Britney Spears and helped write Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
Rhimes owns and founded Shondaland, which produces all of her TV shows. Shondaland used to have a deal with ABC, but now Rhimes is taking her talents to Netflix. So what does that mean for Grey’s Anatomy, HTGAWM and Scandal? Is #TGIT no more?
Scandal is entering it’s final season so it’s not that much of a concern. But Grey’s Anatomy is going into it’s 14th season and is is ABC’s highest-rated drama. While, HTGAWM is on top of it’s game thanks to Viola Davis’ phenomenal acting.
Don’t worry #TGIT will still exist. ABC owns all of the shows, so even though they are produced with Shondaland, ABC’s ownership means that they aren’t going anywhere. It does mean that Rhimes won’t be working on the shows anymore.
She made sure the shows are in good hands before her departure. Rhimes hired veteran Grey’s Anatomy writer to take over and has slowly been pulling out of production of HTGAWM. The shows showrunners are locked into contracts so no major changes will be made. All the shows will go on!
Even the upcoming projects Shondaland developed for ABC will still be happening. There is a legal drama show called For The People and a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.
Grey’s Anatomy and HTGAWM bring in too many ratings for ABC to cancel them out of spite.
Now knowing that OG Shondaland shows are safe, we can finally enjoy the news of new Shondaland shows. Also congratulations to Rhimes for getting that money.
