Danni Messina was caught up in the holiday spirit this weekend. Her one friend was currently spending his Thanksgiving at a St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. That got her thinking of all the families who were spending their holidays at the hospital as well.
She decided to post on Twitter that for every like this tweet receives she’ll donate 25 cents to St. Jude’s and for every retweet 50 cents.
this time of year is about giving – this year, I am giving back to St. Jude & the families who are supported by their amazing services
every favorite : $.25
every retweet : $.50go give. go st. Jude!!

Quickly her tweet went viral. As of right now, she should be donating $208,117.75 to St. Jude’s. According to BuzzFeed, Messina was only planning on donating $1,000 worth of her own money. So yeah, it’s a little over budget.

Because she clearly can’t donate hundreds of thousands of her own money, she is only 19, Messina decided to start a GoFundMe. The GoFundMe’s goal is to raise $50,000 for St Jude’s. It already has a little over $8,000 worth of donations.

Even though Messina says her intentions are good, a GoFundMe for this isn’t the smartest idea. There is no accountability that Messina will donate all the funds to St. Jude’s. You’re putting your donations in the hands of a stranger.
Lots of people are pointing out that you can donate directly to St. Jude’s. They also pointed out that GoFundMe takes part of the proceeds that are raised.
No offense but people should just donate directly to St. Jude https://t.co/7vUMPtzsop

While some people are saying that Messina only posted her original tweet for attention. She could have donated her $1,000 and tweeted to remind others to donate as well, with a link to St. Jude’s.
Why you gotta ask for retweets and likes in order to make a donation? https://t.co/tW7tekeYGx

Hopefully, Messina sticks to her word and donates the money to St. Jude’s, because it’s a lot of money that can help lots of children.
