Early Life

Betty Marion White was born on January 17,1922 in Oak Park, Illinois. She is the only child of her mother Christine Tess, a homemaker and her father, Horace Logan White, a lighting company executive.In the early stages of her career, White made her rounds around movie studios and the like looking for work in the industry but was always shut down because she was told she was “unphotogenic.” White finally got her first big break in 1939 when she and a classmate sang songs on an experimental L.A. based television channel.


1940-1970

For the next 30 years, White would slowly and steadfastly work on building her resume by working various modeling gigs, radio gigs and the like. White got her first gig in the entertainment industry working as an assistant at a local television station and by 1949 landed a co-hosting gig on a variety show that would earn her first Emmy nomination. In 1952, White starred in her very first sitcom, Life With Elizabeth, thus kicking off her sit-com career and long withstanding career working for television. With complete creative control, White worked on Elizabeth for three years. Shortly after that, White continued to host and appear sporadically on viewer’s television screens. In 1962 White made her debut in film when she starred as Kansas Senator Elizabeth Ames Adams in the drama, Advise & Consent. White continued her hosting gigs and appeared on various late night talk shows, and daytime game shows throughout the 60s.


1970-1990

For the next 20 years, White’s acting career would hit its peak. In 1973, White’s guest appearances as Sue Ann Nivens on the popular sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show would land White a permanent position until the series end in 1977. After the show’s finale, White landed her own sitcom, but it was canceled after just one season. White continued to make guest appearances on television movies, miniseries and shows like The Carol Burnett Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In 1983, she became the first woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award for her game show hosting work. From 1983-1985 White starred as Ellen Harper Jackson on the television series Mama’s Family. Along with future castmate Rue McClanahan, White left the show to star in her most prominent role to date starring as St. Olaf, Minnesota-native Rose Nylund on The award-winning series, The Golden Girls.


1990-2010
