Last fall comedian Pete Davidson made a joke about Ariana Grande’s Manchester Bombing terrorist attack. Now that the pair is engaged, Grande fans, especially the ones who were affected in Manchester, are upset.

On May 22, 2017, at the end of Grande’s concert in Manchester a terrorist set off a bomb. It killed 22 people and injured over 500 fans. According to the Mirror Davidson joked, “Britney Spears didn’t have a terrorist attack at her concert,” to prove just how famous Grande is.

Davidson has made light of his own tragedies, like his dad dying during 9/11. He has yet to speak out about his past joke but his representative told Metro, “He is a comedian. No subject is off limits and that includes jokes about his father and 9/11.”

A source close to Davidson told People said the joke has been taken out of context. “He lost his dad in 9/11 and is close with other victims of violent tragedies. As a way of coping he turns to humor.”

Now Grande has spoken about Davidson’s joke. A fan tweeted that they don’t understand why Grande is with Davidson after finding out that he made that joke because of how affected she was by the tragedy.

She responded that hearing his past joke has been “tough” and “conflicting” for her. She explained how he uses comedy to cope with tragedies and says that everyone deals with trauma differently, but still she didn’t find the joke funny.

Grande said that Davidson’s intentions were never malicious, but that the joke was unfortunate.

She sent out a second tweet saying, “I hear and respect you all always.” The fan responded that they respect Grande as well and are grateful she spoke out about the situation and explained how she truly felt.

Charlotte Hodgson, whose daughter Olivia Campbell-Hardy died during the attack called Davidson’s joke “disgusting” and demanded he “publicly apologize for it.”

The Manchester Arena bombing is the deadliest bombing in England since the 2005 London bombings. After the attack Grande held a benefit concert, One Love Manchester, to raise money for injured concert goers. The concert raised over $12 million dollars and roughly 55,000 people attended.

The city of Manchester made Grande an honorary citizen and Grande and her crew got matching bee tattoos to show their solidarity with the city. The bee is the symbol of Manchester because it’s a blue-collar city that has a “working bee” mentality. A bunch of Grande’s superfans got bee tattoos as well.

Grande always looks out for her fans, so obviously, Davidson’s joke puts her in a tough spot. But her response was honest and respectful.
