This Is Us season three, episode five isn’t going to be a light and breezy episode. The last episode we went to Vietnam with Jack Pearson and delved into his childhood and relationship with his family.
It starts out in Vietnam with Jack going to meet his brother, but before that happens it cuts back to a few days earlier. Jack is leading his troops through a jungle before they get attacked. In the attack Robinson, who present day Kevin is talking to for research about his dad, loses his foot. It’s when Jack is scared and carrying Robinson that he teaches Jack the breathing technique. Yes, that breathing trick he taught Randall years later.
When Jack and his troops get reassigned to a different camp he realizes he’s close to Nicky, his younger brother’s camp. His plan to kiss his commanding officers behinds to let him see his brother for 24 hours. But before viewers see how that turns out, they are taken back to the past.
First up is draft day. Nicky’s birthday October 18 gets drafted and Jack devises a plan for him to dodge the draft and escape to Canada. But Nicky has a come to moment and realizes his dad will never speak to him if he dodges the draft so he decides to not dodge, but accept his position in the army.
Then the episode flashes back even further into the past when Nicky and Jack were little kids. Jack steps in and scares off his dad before he abuses his mother again. Jack’s dad is an abuser and alcoholic.
Then cut to the day Nicky was born. Jack’s dad is a nice, sober person at the hospital. His father, Jack’s grandfather is drunk and mean though so that checks out. Nick is born within the last two minutes of October 18. Those two minutes could have meant that Nicky would never have been drafted and Jack wouldn’t have joined the army. Are you in the feels yet?
Cut to Jack meeting his brother at his camp. It’s Nicky and something is not right. Oh, it’s only going to get sadder and worst from here.
Episode five focuses back on the big three and Randall’s run in city government and Toby admitting he went off his meds.
