Greece Has Healthiest Food On The Planet? Opa! Let's Eat!

Tró̱ne mazí mou! That means “eat with me!” in Greek. At least, that’s what Google translate says, and after eight years of French I can tell you it probably says something like me eat you or something not even relatively close to what I typed in. Regardless of my linguistic skills, I know that I’m good at at least one thing: eating food. Because I love cooking just as much as eating, I decided to do a little research into healthy cuisine for my fellow CC’ers.
I really wanted to find out who the hell in the world has the healthiest food, because obvi it is not us, sorry to break it to you guys. I love eating new foods that use unique ingredients and combinations that we don’t see a lot in traditional American food. I really thought the healthiest eaters were going to be found in some small Asian country, and I was looking forward to it, too! (I absolutely love Vietnamese and Thai foods, bring onnnn the veggies!) But, I was actually really surprised to see Greece named as the nation with the healthiest cuisine. Yup, that’s right, Greece.
I mean I love the salads and stuff, and even though gyro meat makes me sick it tastes yummy…but the healthiest eaters of anyone? Really? According to this really offish CNN article (from 2010, so current…) Greece is number one. Luckily, my Asian favorites are also found on the list. In a few weeks I’ll be visiting those nations as well, only on my plate of course, and I’ll fill you in on the fresh-scale.
“California fresh” comes in at number 2, which is described as “seasonal, local foods that are simply prepared.” It makes sense, but I have to say my fave is #3, Vietnamese cuisine, so most likely I’ll be skippin’ to that gem at a later date (please forgive me, Cali girls).
As my motto for this whole healthy lifestyle thing is to “keep it fresh,” I decided to take on the challenge of eating like a Grecian for a day and explore some new recipes and flavors. I stuck mainly to vegetarian dishes (I don’t normally eat a lot of meat anyways), and I really was surprised with how light and — sorry for the redundancy — fresh everything tasted. I love that everything I found online combined heavy and hearty ingredients with light and almost fruity or sweet ones. I chose three large staples in the Greek cuisine to sub for my three meals in the day:  Greek frittata for breffie, an authentic Greek salad for lunch, and Chaniotiko Boureki for dinner!
