Ahh pick-up lines: they’re definitely a hit or miss deal. Usually it’s miss, since pick-up lines tend to be overdone and cheesy. But sometimes, you hear one and you think “That would immediately work on me.” Pick-up lines are best used sparingly, and it takes a lot of originality to come up with a good one on the spot.
That’s why some of the best pick-up lines come from our favorite TV shows. Because let’s face it, between script-writers who come up with the words beforehand and actors who have perfected their comedic timing, it just works out way better for everyone involved. Of course, many characters fail or deliver bad lines, while others stick to simpler methods (“How you doin’?” for one). But here are a few of our favorite pick-up lines that are both clever and successful, as seen on TV:
Phoebe Buffay from Friends
The first time I ever watched this episode of Friends, I’m pretty sure I actually screamed out loud at this part. It is the smoothest line I have ever heard. We should all strive to channel our inner Phoebe when it comes to flirting.
Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother
Of course, we couldn’t leave out the master of picking up women: Barney Stinson. He takes pick-up lines to a whole new level, proving that originality and confidence are key aspects in delivery. Please note: commitment to a pick-up line doesn’t mean commitment to a relationship, as Barney proves.
Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers
Tina is like 13 years old in Bob’s Burgers, but there’s no doubt she has more game than most. Boy-crazy and open for anything, this above scene is one of her finer (and more successful) moments with a guy. The casualness with which she gives him her number is the best part.
Will Smith from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
If that isn’t the smoothest thing you’ve ever seen… Will had a lot of great lines on Fresh Prince, but this is definitely one of the freshest ones (pun intended). Channeling an old-school vibe can definitely work!
Tom Haverford from Parks & Rec
Annoying as he sometimes is, Tom Haverford has a lot of charm. He has so much charm that he literally has to help out some of the less fortunate. While Tom may not have a boo of his own (and Ben is already dating Leslie), this tired pick-up line is made all the better by it coming from a wingman.
