Kesha is a warrior. In 2014 she spoke out and sued her producer, Dr. Luke, for sexual assault — and he fired back, claiming extortion. She was unable to release new music without collaborating with her alleged abuser, and she felt she had no path forward as a musician. Two full years later, in 2016, the judge decided to dismiss all of her allegations, and photos of her crying in the courtroom quickly went viral as her fans stood behind her in the #FreeKesha movement.
In the midst of all of this, her label, Sony, finally agreed to allow her to make music without Dr. Luke (though Dr. Luke still profits from her success) so that she would not be required to directly interact with her alleged abuser. Her first single, “Praying,” released yesterday, is stunning and raw and emotional and everyone need to listen to it immediately.
Here are just a few of the reactions in response to her powerful comeback.
