No One Can Solve This 8-Year-Old’s Math Homework

Parents trying to helpĀ their kids with their math homework is a classic struggle that happens in households across America. But typically elementary math is EASY! It’s just basic math and maybe the occasional fraction. It’s no big deal, right?

Dusty Sappington shared her third-grade kid’s math homework and no one can figure out the answer. The question is “Janell had 15 marbles. She lost some of them. How many does Janell have now?”

This 3rd grade math problem… from funny

How can someone subtract the word some from a number? Some is not a value. Some is not like saying a few, which means two. Some is an unclear amount that ranges from three or more.

It seems like this problem is missing an important sentence to the equation. The problem should include the exact number of marbles Janell now has left. Sappington originally posted the problem on Reddit and everyone agreed that this question is unfair especially to an eight-year-old. The comments also deeply discussed the flaws of the reality show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader.

Trick math questions are the worst! Sappington’s kid answer was a simple “?” and I think that is totally acceptable. They get full credit.
