Small Business Saturday was actually launched back in 2010 by a giant company: American Express. Now it’s a large part of Thanksgiving weekend, along with Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

According to data from American Express in 2015, 95 million people spent $16.2 billion at small businesses on Small Business Saturday. That is huge for little companies.

The internet has completely changed the way Americans shop, but even with packages getting delivered right to your doorstep, supporting local companies is still so important as they create millions of jobs and boost the economy. Larger chain stores actually displace more local jobs than they create because often times, local companies are driven out of business by the big competition.

But shopping small isn’t the only way to support local businesses!

Post on social media! Take photos with friends at the cute family-run restaurants in town and credit the place. Use hashtags and tag your location. Small companies need these little things to ultimately survive.

Also just telling your friends about a really good meal you had recently or your new hairstylist can really go a long way. Local businesses depend on the locals to keep them afloat so share with your neighbors and family members who live in the area. I’m sure they will thank you for it later and it also creates a community. It’s definitely easier to get to know the people in your neighborhood when you see them at the same coffee shop or farmers market every week.

Small businesses are what helps keep your community alive and thriving, so they are definitely worth appreciating.
