When I think of summer, I think of the beach, the pool, s’mores, bonfires, best friends, and carnivals. Obviously, with carnivals comes cotton candy, the sugary fairy-food that totally elevated you to princess status when you were younger (and now too, duh). Here’s a fun fact: “fairy floss” isn’t just a hipster term for cotton candy, it was actually the original name when it was introduced in the 1904 World’s Fair. That’s long-time magic. Cotton candy is basically huge, light puffs of sugary clouds that come in different flavors and colors. How, exactly, cotton candy is made has always been a mystery to me. I’ve seen it made at carnivals, but it’s so fantastical that I could only watch in wonder and not pay attention. Sorry, food magicians.
Cotton candy and carnivals are a quintessential summer pair, but now, it’s more cotton candy and Melanie Martinez. Those clouds in the background of her first album Cry Baby? Totally cotton candy. The pink aesthetic gives it away. So does the alternative childhood theme of the album and Martinez’s signature cute, electro pop look.
Whether you associate cotton candy with summer or with Melanie Martinez, the fact still remains that cotton candy is delicious and a happy food.
