Italian cities are trying desperately to get people to move to their town. A few months ago, Candela, Italy announced that they would pay people to move to their southern town. Now Ollolai is selling houses for less than $2 to increase their population. You can literally live out your Italian dream for less than a large Starbucks coffee.
Ollolai is in the mountain region of Barbagia of Sardinia, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. The town is selling hundreds of abandoned houses for one Euro, which is about $1.20.
But there is a catch though. The houses that are being sold for a little over a dollar are not up-to-date villas with an open floor plan. The stone-built homes are being sold if the buyer commits to refurbishing the house within three years. CNN estimates that the renovations would cost around $25,000.
CNN“They’re picturesque old buildings made with Sardinia’s typical gray granite rock that grows on mountain peaks and shores,” Ollolai’s mayor, Efisio Arbau told CNN.
The city of Ollolai’s plan is the rejuvenate their population while also preserving its history. The city is at risk of becoming a ghost town due to its shrinking population that is now at a total of 1,300.

Arbau said that the government has already sold three houses and has 100 applicants in from all over the world. He’s hoping this real estate move will bring new life and jumpstart the economy in Ollolai.

“This quiet town is frozen in time. It offers a peaceful, healthy life,” Vito Casula said to CNN, he’s one of the three people who has already bought and renovated a home. Casula also said that the locals are welcoming and the “great views have a healing power.”
We are totally sold.
