Most people hold little self-awareness about their drunk alter-egos (especially if they’re irritating), but of course Jennifer Lawrence is not one of those people. The Oscar-winning actress stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week to promote Red Sparrow and to shed some light onto her hyper-aggressive, adrenaline-junkie alter-ego, who is spawned by rum.
“I can’t go on a vacation right now because I just can’t deal with Gail,” she admitted, sharing her alter-ego’s suburban-sounding name. “I need a rest before Gail.”
Gail, she explained, isn’t her go-to drunk alter-ego, and she certainly doesn’t come out every time she has a glass of wine: “It’s a very specific drunk. It’s not like every time I’m drunk I turn into Gail. I think she’s some sort of like tortoise gambler, or something. I don’t always turn into this masculine alter-ego that jumps into shark-ridden waters just to make my friends laugh.”
In case you were thinking that’s a relatable-yet-not-at-all-relatable-because-I-can’t-afford-to-vacation-that-often story the actress invented, she promises it’s true. “My friends were like, ‘that’s too far! Jen, not funny!'”
J-Law hypothesized that Gail comes from rum, a drink she only enjoys on vacation, and showed a picture of the queen, lopsided smile, wild hair and all.
“I was trying to look cute! I was getting photographed with all of my girlfriends at the beach. I wanted to look cute,” she laughed. “My whole face is just crooked. The hair, too, just so presidential.”
