This One Thing Made Selena Gomez’s Kidney Transplant Almost Fatal

Last summer Selena Gomez nearly broke the internet when she revealed that she had a kidney transplant and her donor was one of her best friends Francia Raísa.

The two friends have spoken candidly about their surgery and just how close they are, like sisters if you’re wondering.

Now Raísa opened up how scary the surgery was and how she offered to give Gomez a kidney when she didn’t even ask.

“[Gomez] was asking me about my day and she grabbed a water bottle out of the fridge and tried to open it and couldn’t,” Raísa told W. “Then she threw it on the floor, and she fell to the floor and started crying. I was like, ‘What is wrong with you?’ She said, ‘I need a new kidney. I don’t know what I’m going to do, the waitlist is seven to 10 years.'”

Raísa said that’s when she offered her kidney and to get tested. “I called her assistant behind her back to get the information, and that’s how the process started.”

We all know Raísa was a match and the two had the transplant surgery. Right after the three-hour surgery was over Gomez had a complication. “A few hours after our surgery, I woke up and had a text from her that said, ‘I’m really scared.’”

Gomez’s instincts were right because her new kidney from Raísa flipped because it was so active, and when it turned it broke an artery. “They had to take her into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney in place,” Raísa stated. “She could have died.”

Raisa said recovery was very hard and that she didn’t want to do anything, eat or drink afterward. But since revealing the life-changing surgery Raisa has been flaunting her surgery scars and on the new show, Grown-ish and Gomez has rekindled her romance with Justin Bieber.
