Memes come and go, but not all memes are created equal. Right now a scene from an anime series is getting the meme treatment on Twitter. The screengrab shows Yutaro Katori gesturing to a butterfly and the subtitle reads, “Is this a pigeon?”
The screengrab is mistaken as a subtitle that went wrong, but that’s false. Katori mistakes the butterfly as a pigeon on purpose. According to Know Your Meme, he’s a human android created by professor Hiroshi Amano and he’s learning about the earth and all of its creatures. He’s genuinely asking if that butterfly is a pigeon because he doesn’t know what a pigeon is.
This isn’t the first time this scene from The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird has gone viral. Back in 2011, the screengrab was uploaded to Tumblr and went viral gaining over 100,000 notes. Now the screengrab has made it’s return to social media seven years later to be memed again.
Twitter users are writing over the screengrab and re-identifying the butterfly, Katori and the pigeon. It’s hilarious because it points out the obvious and makes fun of yourself or another group of people.
