On July 24, 2018, Demi Lovato was rushed to the hospital for an apparent drug overdose. Initially believed to be heroin, but now it’s supposedly Oxycodone that was laced with fentanyl. Lovato is currently in rehab seeking help.
In Selena Gomez’s recent Elle cover story she commented on her childhood friend’s recent overdose.
“All I’m saying is, I reached out personally,” Gomez told Elle while getting choked up. “I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I…I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So…it’s…that’s what I’ll say.”
This interview was six days after Lovato’s overdose, so it was fresh.
This isn’t the first time Lovato has been in rehab and not the first time Gomez has reached out to her old friend.
In 2011 Lovato was in rehab for an eating disorder and self-harm. At the time she was also abusing drugs. Lovato said that while in rehab Gomez contacted her.
“[Selena} called me crying when I was in there and was just so worried,” Lovato said in an interview when asked which of her friends were the most supportive. “I was like, ‘Look, I should be the one crying, it’s all good!’ But she was so worried and ever since we’ve gotten closer.”
The two first appeared on Barney and Friends from 2002 to 2004. Since then the two girl’s paths moved together and they both ended up on Disney Channel. Gomez went on to star on Wizards of Waverly Place and Lovato on Sonny with a Chance and then Camp Rock.
The two filmed the Disney movie Princess Protection Program. The friends called each other best friends, posted YouTube videos together and did joint tabloid interviews.
A year later she entered rehab and the two reconciled. The two went back to being BFFs, but things have cooled since.
Even though the two aren’t glued at the hip they both care for each other.
