Miss Michigan Called Out Flint’s Water Crisis During The Miss America Pageant

On Sunday, September 9, the Miss America pageant aired. The pageant has been stirring up controversy lately between the leaked emails and the axed swimsuit portion. On Sunday it continued to stir up buzz when Miss Michigan, Emily Sioma brought attention to the Flint, Michigan water crisis.

The contestants get to introduce themselves quickly at the beginning of the competition. During Sioma’s intro, she decided to use her short time to bring awareness to Michigan’s water crisis.

“From the state with 84% of the U.S. freshwater but none for its resident to drink, I am Miss Michigan Emily Sioma,” she said.

Miss Michigan should automatically win #MissAmerica for starting with this! 😳 #Home #GoGirl pic.twitter.com/fdhRILMEtA

She was bringing awareness specifically to Flint, Michigan’s water crisis due to lead. In April 2014 the city switched their water supply from Detroit’s to the Flint River. Soon after residents began falling ill and noticing discoloration and issues with the water. It wasn’t until October 2015 that Flint officials told residents to stop drinking the tap water and switch their water supply back to Detroit’s. At the beginning of 2016, President Obama declared a state of emergency in Flint.

Even though the state of emergency was declared over two years ago, Flint still doesn’t have clean water. It’s an ongoing epidemic that gets regularly ignored.

Sioma’s political introduction caught the attention of everyone, even non-Miss American fans.
