The free candy is nice, but you know what else I love about Halloween? The music. Whether it’s a whacky and playful tune or something darker and foreboding, you’ll never run out of songs to play. I’m a little Halloween obsessed, so you can bet your candy that I have a Halloween playlist ready to go.
I could probably make a huge list, but I’ll cut it down for you guys. Here are some whacky and memorable tunes to listen to this Halloween season. Whether or not you’re trick-or-treating or attending a Halloween party, you simply have to listen to these songs.
1. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA
You absolutely cannot have Halloween without “Thriller.” This is a cult classic (pun intended) that embodies the spirit of the season. I’m not ashamed to admit that I have parts of the dance down pat and I break it out between house visits.
2. “Disturbia” by Rihanna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1mU6h4Xdxc
Looking for the perfect addition to a party playlist? Rihanna’s “Disturbia” might be just the thing you’re looking for. The lyrics and the beat are catchy and can easily match a Halloween theme. If you’re still not convinced, watch the music video here. I’m sure fans of American Horror Story: Asylum will love this song even more.
3. “She Wolf” by Shakira
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=booKP974B0k
Here’s something a little more playful for the faint of heart. I’m sure Shakira didn’t intend for “She Wolf” to become a Halloween staple, but it’s not a bad idea to mix it up every now and then. This song is sure to get the werewolves howling.
4. “This is Halloween” by Marilyn Manson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ARIui9K1aU
If you have never watched The Nightmare Before Christmas, you have to do it this season. You might be a little skeptical about how Halloween and Christmas could ever mix in a movie, but it just works. Not convinced? Listen to this song and you’ll understand why.
5. “Monster” by Lady Gaga
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVq6dxaI_6A
You don’t even have to start listening to the song. The title alone already tips you off that this will be a fitting addition to any Halloween playlist. “Monster” came out back in 2009 in Lady Gaga’s album, The Fame Monster. While it’s not exactly a spooky tune, you should definitely try giving it a listen next time you’re out on a drive.
6. “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juR5-On2UYg
Let’s take a step back and revisit some Halloween roots. This song is a throwback to the good old days when the highlight of Halloween was rewatching Hocus Pocus and Halloween Town for the hundredth time.
7. “Beautiful Monster” by Ne-Yo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J2dwFVZHsY
Halloween isn’t always about disgusting creatures in the dark. Ne-Yo’s song tells us that there might be a monster right next to you. The best part? You wouldn’t even mind. This haunting tune will make you think of just how beautiful a monster can be.
8. “I Put a Spell on You” by Nina Simone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dACxjlNaBs
There have been many covers and remixes of this song, but I’ll take the original any day. If you’re dressing up as a witch or simply a fan of Hocus Pocus, it wouldn’t hurt to learn this catchy song.
9. “Emperor’s New Clothes” by Panic! At the Disco
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qFF2v8VsaA
Are you the type to prefer tricks over treats? This song is for you. You won’t believe how many times I’ve had this song repeat on my phone. Don’t even get me started on how awesome the music video is. Seriously, watch it now.
10. “Spooky Scary Skeletons (Remix)” by The Living Tombstone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6-ZGAGcJrk
A lot of people won’t agree with me on this one, but I’m going to abuse my authority here and put a personal addition to this list. What used to be a simple tune has become a popular meme; especially during the Fall season. This is an upbeat remix of a children’s Halloween song and is one of the most popular choices of music for skeleton-based memes.
