Photographer Tony Ross gave a much needed update to Disney’s iconic princesses. Ross photographed the princesses as their original Disney selves and then later as the queens they are bound to become.

The photos are unlike any other re-imagined Disney princesses because, well, they aren’t princesses!

Anyone obsessed with the princesses and real life royalty knows that being a princess and being a queen are two drastically different things. Being a queen is more responsibility and more regal than a princess.

According to Seventeen, Ross captured the Disney princesses transformation from young princesses to royal queens with the help of designer Nephi Garcia.

Cinderella as a princess shows her barefoot and enjoying nature, as one princess does.

While Queen Cinderella is way less playful and more regal.

Princess Ariel is a mermaid still looking longingly at the shore.

Queen Ariel has legs and her red hair is less bright making her look more mature.

Princess Mulan is shown nervously cutting off her hair, presumably before she joins the army.
