The Winter Olympics are fast approaching and it’s hard to get hyped for the Olympics knowing fan favorites Simone Biles and Michael Phelps won’t be competing because winter isn’t their season. But now that has all changed because we have a new American Olympian to root for, Maame Biney.
Biney is bringing attention to the less popular Winter Olympics just from her speed skating qualifying trials. Biney became the first African-American woman to make the woman’s U.S. Olympic speed skating team ever. She made history at the young age of 17.

She won two 500 meters races to qualify for the team. In her last race, she beat out former Olympic medalists Lana Gehring, Jessica Kooreman and Katherine Reutter-Adamek. She isn’t at the Olympic games yet and she is already beating medalists!

Biney was born in Ghana but came to the states at 5-years-old to visit her father. She loved American so much she decided to stay in Washington DC with her dad and not go back to Ghana. Biney originally started skating as a figure skater, but because of her speed, her coach suggested she switch to speed skating.
Now she is the first African-American woman and second African-American person to ever be on the U.S. speed skating team.
Her qualifying video has people amped to watch her compete during the Winter Olympics in February 2018.
