Just after Becca Kufrin’s season of The Bachelorette kicked off fans discovered that contestant Garrett Yrigoyen had a problematic Instagram past. Ashley Spivey, who was a former contestant, exposed Garrett’s past Instagram likes. He liked posts that were fat shaming, calling Parkland School shooting survivor David Hogg a crisis actor, transphobic and racist.

Now after Garrett has won the show and supposedly Becca’s heart he has released a full statement regarding his social media past. Long story short is that he didn’t know his social media activity would be a direct reflection of himself.

“I didn’t mean to offend anyone,” Garrett told People. “Just because I liked it, doesn’t necessarily mean that I supported it. I was raised in a very open-minded family that was accepting to everybody. We’re very non-judgmental. I’m genuinely sincere.”

It’s amazing that Garrett is 29-years-old and doesn’t know how social media works.

Becca is sticking by her man and saying that he’s really a good guy. “People have been saying really terrible things about [Garrett], but that’s not who he is,” she told People. “At his core, he’s a good guy. We’ve all made mistakes and done things that aren’t perfect. But all I could ask for is somebody who owns up to what they’ve done and who apologizes and wants to grow. And that’s what he’s done.”

I agree that people can change and apologize, but Garrett is not owning up to his now “past” beliefs. He just keeps repeating that his likes don’t reflect who he is. But

But is that really what he’s done? Garrett keeps repeating that his likes don’t reflect who he is. Yes, he apologized, but he’s not taken ownership for his actions. You like things on social media because you LIKE what is in the photograph or being said. It’s a very easy concept, so it’s amazing to think that Garrett believes he’s above this conception.

After the exposé of his social media history, he changed his profile to private and the show barely did any damage control. He released a statement on his new Instagram saying that his likes aren’t a reflection of himself. After the first episode, when Garrett won the first impression rose, Becca released a vague statement about Garrett.

“I want viewers to be open to everyone, and I want them to go through this season with me and watch my love story unfold with all of these men…because that’s how I went into this journey,” Becca told Entertainment Tonight. “I did things in the past that I’m sure wasn’t the best thing, but I just want people to stay open-minded to everyone.”

Becca has a pretty liberal feminist political viewpoint so you would think she would have a more serious outlook on Garrett’s likes.

They’ll definitely live happily ever after.
