Modern Family‘s Haley Dunphy has never dated anyone other than cis, straight men on the show– but actress Sarah Hyland would like that to change.
The 26-year-old took to Twitter this week to respond to one fan begging her to “confirm” that her longtime character is bisexual, and she was only too happy to do so.
“I don’t know what the writers would say?” she responded, “But I confirm.”
This led to a slew of articles from reputable news sources with headlines like “Sarah Hyland Confirms Haley Dunphy’s Sexuality” and “Haley Dunphy is Bisexual, Hyland Reveals,” forcing the actress to dispute the reporting of her opinion as fact.
“Just to clarify, I haven’t been told nor is there anything written that would indicate Haley is bisexual,” she tweeted. “That’s just my personal opinion!”
Then, again: “Did not reveal. Nor confirm. Just stated my personal OPINION… and a story line I would PERSONALLY like to see. But that’s just me.”
While Hyland’s words are often taken out of context, forcing the actress to defend her opinions on Twitter and Instagram, her original point — that she would love to see her character written as a bisexual woman — is no small one.
The fact that Haley has only dated men on the show by no means suggests that she is not bisexual (you can be bisexual and only date one gender). Introducing another same-sex relationship to the show and having Haley and her family respond to that development would only add dimension to her spirited, if occasionally slow-witted, party-girl character.
Hyland’s bisexual followers, who are hard-pressed to find accurate bisexual representation on television, certainly would love to see it.
We hope that Modern Family takes note of the fan reactions to Hyland’s tweet and considers writing a bisexual storyline into the show.
