Being royal isn’t easy. Duchess Meghan, formerly known as Suits star Meghan Markle, is still adjusting to the new rules Duchess life entails. Even though Meghan won’t be able to show her bare legs in public ever again, there are lots of perks of royal life. For example, being gifted a “cottage” from the Queen that is actually a mansion.

Listen, any mansion sitting next to Windsor Castle will appear cottage-esque. The Adelaide Cottage is the new home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but it once was home for Princess Margaret’s lover Captain Peter Townsend. It’s like the Queen is trying to get a writing job for The Crown.

For non-Crown fans let’s talk about why this is juicy. First off, watch The Crown and I wouldn’t need to explain this. Townsend and Margaret’s romance was covered in the first season of the Netflix show. Secondly, the couple was in love, but when Townsend proposed Margaret couldn’t accept because he was a divorceé and his ex-wife was still living.

In the Church of England, you couldn’t re-marry if your ex-spouse was still alive. This is the whole reason why King Edward VIII, Margaret’s uncle, abdicated and gave up the throne to marry a divorced American woman. His abdication made Margaret and her sister Queen Elizabeth’s dad the King of England. Got all of that?

In The Crown, it shows Queen Elizabeth telling her sister that she can’t marry him and gives her a “choice” to give up her title and family to mary Townsend. She agrees to not marry him and Townsend is shipped off to a post in Brussels, Belgium and therefore shipped out of her life. Imagine having so much power that you can just send your ex-boyfriend to a different country when you break up. Amazing.

But while the two were dating, Townsend worked for the family and conveniently lived in the Adelaide Cottage. And now Prince Harry and his American divorceé with a living ex-spouse Duchess are going to live in that same house. The royal family never disappoints.

According to the Daily Mail, the cottage was built in 1831 and had a renovation in 2015. The cottage sits on Windsor Home Park’s 655 acres. It is also close to the church where the couple wed.

The master bedroom in the cottage has a “coved ceiling with gilded dolphins and rope ornament from a 19th Century Royal yacht.” It also has a marble Graeco-Egyptian style fireplace and seven gated entrances and exits to the castle so the couple can come and go without being photographed.

Town & Country say the couple like the cottage because of how close it is to London. It sits roughly 25 miles from the city.

The newlyweds are going to be moving in soon. They are currently living in the Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, which I’m going to assume is also a mansion that has gilded ceilings of dolphins.
