For what feels like centuries, the world has listened when Anna Wintour has spoken. We’ve held their breath when Anna Wintour breathes. Anna Wintour’s interns have run in front of moving traffic so they can escape the line at Starbucks and order her venti-sugar-free-non-fat-soy double-pump almond half-pump mocha no whip latte in only 53 seconds.
But on the inside, Anna Wintour is something of a mystery…that is, until the truth was unveiled through a series of images that portray Ms. Wintour in her natural element.

Here at CollegeCandy we like to consider ourselves quite the fashion go-to girls. I mean, we tell you where to shop, what to buy, and how to wear it. So it’s only right that today, the first day of Mercedes Benz Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week (gah, that’s a mouthful!), we offer you our two cents on what’s to come.
But not so much on the clothes themselves, or even the designers. We’ll leave that to the professionals. Instead we’d rather focus on everything else. So here’s what’s coming your way from the runways of New York over the next 7 days. Well, besides the great clothes, and the good looking guys, and the gorgeous models, that is.
1. The ugliest clothes you’ve ever seen. They’ll be hideous. Unflattering. Out of proportion. They will break every fashion rule that has ever been made. No one will ever wear them. And no one will ever want to. But for the entirety of Fashion Week people will rave about how brilliant the designers are, and how great the clothes look. And sure they will probably inspire some really cute outfits from some less than Fashion Week-worthy designers, but those clothes? The originals? Those won’t be worn again. Not even by Blair Waldorf. Do you know what today is?
Yes, it’s Thursday.
But it’s not just any old Thursday. It’s the most fabulous Thursday of 2010.
It’s the first day of New York Fashion Week!
As we speak, the world’s biggest designers are putting the final touches on their ferosh spring 2011 looks, Rachel Zoe is going bananas over the Oscar looks she’ll inevitably find at the shows, Lindsay Lohan is waiting with baited breath to see if she’ll get any front row seats this year (I’m putting my money on no), and Anna Wintour is scouling from behind a pair of oversized sunglasses (standard).
Meanwhile, we’re busy living the slightly less glamorous life: writing the first papers of the year, getting back into the groove of seemingly endless homework assignments, or – if you’re as lucky as I am – studying for grad school admissions tests.
Let’s face it: the closest any of us college-going girls are going to get to this year’s Fashion Week is an impromptu clothing swap with our roommates. Read More »

Since we’re well into the lazy days of July, I have no doubt that by now you’ve taken in your fair share of reruns and reality TV. Between puttering back and forth from a boring job at the mall and babysitting the kids down the street, you’re bound to slip into that coma only a comfy couch and summer television can bring.
As you watch the celebs parade around in all their glitz, do you find yourself yearning for a more sparkly life? Do you wish you were drinking Cristal instead of Crystal Light? Maybe wearing Gucci instead of Gap? Fear not, we’ve all been there. With visions of sugar plums and Rachel Zoe dancing through our heads, it’s not hard to wish we were someone else. Someone, perhaps, more like… Read More »

[While everyone is fabulous in their own right, we thought we should celebrate the campus fashionistas of the world for their continued excellence in not looking like a hot mess for class. So, we started stalking those girls on campus (think Victoria's fun accessories) to get a few pics and get some tips on their personal style.
And maybe a restraining order or two.
But it’s worth it to highlight fresh, unique wardrobe choices that show personality and the courage to wear what you believe in. You think you’ve got some major style? Know someone else who’s always looking ferosh? Think the world needs to see what she can do? Send us an email with some photos and she could be the next fashionista celebrated right here.]
For someone who adores UFC, Scaachi definitely does not dress the part (though if you bought her a “Tap out” t-shirt she’d probably love you forever). The first time I was formally introduced to Scaachi, she was dressed like Jackie O. (it was Halloween), but since then I’ve always admired her feminine style. I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve seen her in pants in the months I’ve known her, as she says skirts and dresses are much more sophisticated and give her room to move (in case she needs to practice her wrestling moves?).
The perfect example of how to make discount fashion look good, Scaachi always looks put together, despite the fact that she shops at some of the thriftiest stores around. But what stands out about her most is her signature accessory: an interesting, unique coat. She’s always got one topping off her outfits and the day I found her, it was this black brocade coat that stopped me in my tracks. It was so beautiful, yet so understated at the same time (much like all of Scaachi’s accessory choices). She didn’t look like a girl on her way to class – she looked like some fabulous fashion magazine editor on her way to a shoot.
Maybe it’s her attention to detail, maybe it’s her ability to mix things together to get just the right look, or maybe it’s the bold lip she favors (which most college girls shy away from), but this girl’s got a style that totally inspires me. Read More »

March is Women’s History Month and in honor of that we’ve been taking some time to highlight and salute some female powerhouses that inspire us. There are just so many women out there doing incredible things, which is hard to remember when women tend only to get recognized for boobs (Heidi Montag), sex scandals (Tiger’s “friends”) and weight (Jessica Simpson). But they’re out there, doing their thing and inspiring us to break down barriers, go for our goals and be our best selves.
So who are these wonderful women? This week the CollegeCandy writers share who inspires them most. Who inspires you?
Kelly – University of Iowa: Definitely my mom. She didn’t go to college but still managed to work her way up the corporate ladder to a wonderful, well-paying job and always tries to instill the same values into me.
Ness – Sheridan: As weird as it sounds, probably Sue Johanson. I’ve grown up watching her shows, and I think she’s both hilarious and incredibly smart. I just wanna hug her!
Jessica – Hofstra: Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. She’s probably the most powerful woman in the fashion and magazine industry. She might be tough but she has also achieved an enormous amount and I can only wish to be that successful. Read More »

After my incredible experience at New York Fashion Week this fall (I have a full-year internship in New York City), I became hooked. Luckily, my job in the beauty industry supported my newfound love for this high-energy event and scheduled me to work backstage at some of the biggest shows of the season. I’d only experienced Fashion Week from the front row (yeah, I’m a baller), but never behind-the-scenes, wrangling models and stylists alike.
It was truly an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to both work backstage and watch the shows. I got a truly unique perspective and learned some very interesting things about the goings on of fashion shows. Here are the five biggest things you don’t know about your favorite designers’ biggest events.
1. The models are people too (kinda).
The models actually are, for the most part, friendly. I know, it’s shocking. Some are rude, but generally they’re nice. They also eat. A lot. Before one show, I watched a group of these pin-thin girls eat mountains of Double-Stuf Oreos, gummy worms and cheese. Gross, right? I can’t decide if that makes me hate them more or a little less. At one show I was told there wasn’t enough food backstage. The models threw such a fit about it that the designer ended up ordering boxes of pizza for them. So yes, they eat. And they can read. And yes, they are very, very scary skinny. And a lot of them are super young, even as young as 15 or 16. Read More »

Don't let her size fool you.
Just recently, the Army made Sgt. Maj. Teresa L. King the first female drill sergeant. No woman has ever held this top position. Another leap for womankind.
It made me think about all the women who have paved the way for King and the rest of us to reach great heights. As we sift through homework assignments and curse the injustice of thesis papers, we should take a time-out to gain inspiration from those who have already made it to where we want to be.
Oprah Winfrey
My bookshelf contains every single one of Oprah’s Book Club recommendations. She is my lifestyle guru, and her talk show has gotten me through some dark times. Not only has she been ranked as one of the world’s most powerful women by CNN and Time.com, but she’s also one seriously cool lady. She inspires all of us to live our best life and share what we have with those around us. I always find myself asking, “WWOD?” And every time, it’s something that makes me a better person and my life a little more enriched. Read More »
