The Weeknd has released his new EP My Dear Melancholy and it’s his first album since his breakup with Selena Gomez. Naturally, fans are scouring his lyrics for references toward his ex-girlfriend and they weren’t hard to find. In fact, they’re hard to miss. He might as well have name dropped Selena in his song, “Call Out My Name”.
The song opens up with, “We found each other / I helped you out of a broken place / You gave me comfort / But falling for you was my mistake / I put you on top, I put you on top / I claimed you so proud and openly / And when times were rough, when times were rough / I made sure I held you close to me”
Maybe he’s referencing how Selena was sick during the tail end of their relationship. Selena has Lupus and during summer of 2017 was very ill and needed a kidney transplant. The lyrics definitely hint at that, but we’re not certain it’s about Selena, yet.
The Weeknd sings in the chorus, “Girl, Why can’t you wait? (Why can’t you wait, baby?) / Girl, why can’t you wait ’till I fall out of love?” Uh, okay this song is FOR SURE about Selena. If you remember Selena got back together with her former ex Justin Bieber right after she and The Weeknd broke up. It seems like The Weeknd is asking her why she can’t wait to move on until he’s over her.
If that wasn’t enough for you, the second verse seals the deal. “I said I didn’t feel nothing, baby, but I lied / I almost cut a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop / ‘Til you made up your mind / You just wasted my time / You’re on top”
How did he manage to NOT name drop Selena? When he says he was going to cut a piece of him for her life, he is clearly referencing her kidney transplant. Leading us to believe that he was going to give Selena a God dang kidney. A KIDNEY. Imagine having your ex-boyfriends’ kidney inside of your for the rest of your LIFE. We know she didn’t use The Weeknd’s kidney and ultimately choose her friend Francis Raisa’s.
But that’s not all. He sings that he’s just another pit stop until she made up her mind. He should have just name dropped Justin here too. Jelena has a tumultuous history. They were always on a break, breaking up, flirting with other people and getting back together. Old habits die hard because that’s what they’re doing now. It seems like The Weeknd is commenting on that relationship pattern noting that he was just another pit stop until she ultimately decided to get back with Justin.
The Weeknd hasn’t confirmed that this song is about Selena, their relationship and/or Justin, but it’s pretty obvious.
