The Kardashian-Jenners are drawn to the spotlight. The reality TV family is known for their scandals and controversies. People really hate the Kardashians or they really love them. But there is no denying that the family has been in the middle of some problematic situations.

Kim’s Sex Tape – 2007
The first scandal that started it all. In 2002, Kim made a sex tape with her then-boyfriend Ray J.
Five years later in 2007, Vivid Entertainment released the sex tape. Kim tried to stop the tape for being released and sued the company but ultimately settled the suit. She reportedly settled for $5 million.
Kim was simply known as OJ Simpson’s lawyer’s daughter or Paris Hilton’s best friend. This sex tape put her on the map and then a few months later Keeping Up With The Kardashians was released.
Many argue that because Kim settled the lawsuit she ultimately agreed for the sex tape to be released. Details about her settlement are unknown.
Kim’s 72-Day Marriage – 2011
The next biggest scandal from the Kardashians is Kim’s 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries. The two started dating in October 2010 and were engaged by May 2011. The couple wed in August 2011.
Their wedding was filmed for KUWTK and aired in two parts in early October 2011 and was the finale for season six of the show. Their two-night wedding special earned the networks highest ratings and made more than $10 million in ad revune.
On October 31, 2011, Kim filed for divorce. Her 72-day marriage was dragged by the media and dubbed as an elaborate PR stunt from the family. Her 72-day marriage was the butt of every joke that year. Their divorce was finalized in 2013.
In a 2017 The Hollywood Reporter profile on the family, Kim revealed the truth behind the marriage. She thought the anxiety she was feeling toward the wedding was because of the show and the fact it was being filmed. But before it was too late, Kim realized she really did have cold feet.
“The night before [the wedding], my mom pulled me aside, off camera, and was like, ‘This isn’t it for you. Why don’t you go away and I’ll handle it?’ I felt like, if I pulled out now, everyone’s going to think I just did it for the show,” Kim recounted to THR.
“Then Afterwards, people were saying, ‘You have to stay married for a year,’ but I physically couldn’t do it,” Kim continued. “When I made the decision [to divorce], everyone said it was made up for the show Everyone really wanted to take me down.”
Kylie’s Lip Fillers – 2015
At 17-years-old Kylie admitted that she had lip fillers. For months the teenager swore that she didn’t have any fillers or work done on her lips. It wasn’t until 2015 that Kylie admitted to getting lip fillers. In 2016 she talked in detail about her insecurities and the painful lip fillers.
“When you first get them done, you’re like, ‘Oh, it could be a little bit bigger on that side.’ I’d go back and be like, ‘They went down’ and think they could be bigger,” Kylie told Complex. “But I went too far. It was very painful.”
She told the publication that a boy once told her she had small lips spurring a lifelong insecurity. She didn’t admit to the fillers until she was 17 because she didn’t want to be judged by mom’s and her younger fans.
Her huge lips launched a trend in lip fillers and her billion dollar Lip Kit beauty empire, Kylie Cosmetics.
Khloe Khlo-C-D Videos – 2015
In 2015 Khloe started making her Khlo-C-D videos where she shows fans how she organizes her house and products.
In her first ever Khlo-C-D video she shows fans how she stacks her cookie jars and in the video calls herself “crazy” and a “sociopath.” She even goes further and says, “You say OCD is a disease, but I say it’s a blessing.”
Khloe still uses the term Khlo-C-D today and has received so much flack for her glamorization of a mental illness.
She’s been criticized ruthlessly for conflating being organized and neat to having a mental illness.
Kourtney & Scott Cheating – 2015
Where to begin with these two? Kourtney and Scott have always had a tumultuous relationship.
During season one of KUWTK Scott was accused of cheating on Kourtney and the two split. Then they got back together and had their first kid Mason. The pair continued to break up, get back together and have more kids.
In July 2015 photos were published that showed Scott with his ex-girlfriend, Chloe Bartoli, while in Monaco. The two split up over Scott’s cheating and drinking.
This was the end for the two and the start of Scott desperately and problematically trying to get back with Kourtney. After the two split rumors started that Kourtney was seeing Justin Bieber.
Kendall’s Pepsi Ad – 2017
Kendall starred in one of the most controversial commercials of all time. Kendall leads a mob of people to a protest, but once faced with a wall of police she simply hands one of them a Pepsi and all of their problems and differences are cured. The ad came out during a time when people were protesting police brutality and crying out Black Lives Matter.
Within minutes Kendall and Pepsi were being crucified for their tone-deaf ad. The ad was released on April 4, 2017, and was pulled the following day on April 5, 2017.
There a few doctored versions (for legal reasons) of the ad on YouTube, but you’d be hard pressed to find the real full ad.
In season 14 of KUWTK Kendall addressed the scandal. Through sobs, Kendall said, “Obviously, if I knew that this was going to be the outcome, I would have never done something like this.”
Kendall took a lot of the brunt of the criticism, given that she was the star of the ad and gave the cop the Pepsi.
“I trusted everyone. I trusted the teams,” Kendall said about the commercial on KUWTK. “But after I saw the reaction and I read what people had to say about it, I most definitely saw what went wrong. I was so stuck, and I really didn’t know what to do, that I completely shut down.”
The family never name dropped Pepsi, but it was clear what commercial they were talking about.
Kendall & Kylie’s Biggie Shirts – 2017

2017 wasn’t a good year for the Jenner’s. Kendall and Kylie were dragged for using images of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur on shirts for the Kendall + Kylie clothing line. The rappers images were overlayed by colored images of Kendall or Kylie’s faces.
People were upset that Kendall and Kylie were using the legendary rappers’ image to sell shirts. Biggie’s mom, Voletta Wallace was especially vocal about her distaste for the shirts.
“I am not sure who told @kyliejenner and @kendalljenner that they had the right to do this. The disrespect of these girls to not even reach out to me or anyone connected to the estate baffles me,” Wallace wrote on Instagram. “I have no idea why they feel they can exploit the deaths of 2pac and my Son Christopher to sell a t-shirt. This is disrespectful, disgusting, and exploitation at its worst!!!”
The shirts were promptly pulled from their store and the sisters issued an apology.
Kendall posted a notes app apology saying, “these designs were not well thought out and we deeply apologize to anyone that has been upset and/or offended, especially to the familiar of the artists.”
Kim’s Blackface Allegations – 2017

Kim announced her KKW Beauty line to controversy. The promotional photos for her first product, contour kits, made everyone do a double take. Kim’s skin was significantly darker in the images, which led fans to call her out for blackface.
Fans bombarded the image and called Kim out for trying to look black when she’s white.
In an interview with the New York Times, Kim talked about the blackface controversy.
“I would obviously never want to offend anyone. I used an amazing photographer and a team of people. I was really tan when we shot the images, and it might be that the contrast was off. But I showed the image to many people, to many in the business. No one brought that to our attention. No one mentioned it,” Kim stated.
After the backlash, Kim and her team pulled the images and fixed them.
Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna Revenge Porn – 2017
Another problematic Kardashian relationship. Rob and Blac Chyna began dating in January 2016 and got engaged by April of that same year. A month later in May, Chyna announced she was pregnant. The couple had their own show, Rob & Chyna.
Their relationship was always rocky and burst into flames in July 2017 when Rob posted revenge porn of Chyna on his Instagram.
The photos were graphic and posted without Chyna’s consent. The revenge porn was accompanied by multiple other posts of Chyna making out with another man and shaming her for getting plastic surgery post-baby.
Rob got permanently banned from Instagram due to his actions. Chyna is suing him for revenge porn.
Khloe & Tristan’s Cheating – 2018
Tristan Thompson’s cheating scandal shocked the world. A day before Khloe was to give birth to their daughter, True Thompson, it was revealed that Tristan cheated on her throughout her pregnancy.
There was footage of him kissing one woman while in New York City days before Khloe was going to give birth. There were also photos him bringing a different woman to his hotel that same weekend. This all went down in April 2018.
After the news initially broke, TMZ posted a video of Tristan making out with two women in a hookah lounge in Washington D.C. from October 2017.
The Kardashians were filming season 15 of KUWTK when the news broke and the family was very candid about their thoughts of Tristan’s cheating.
