CoverGirl has broken a lot of norms. James Charles became the first CoverBoy, Nura Afia was named the brand ambassador in a move that increases representation for Muslim communities and most recently, 69-year-old model Maye Musk became the newest CoverGirl. Amidst knocking down gender, ethnic and age barriers, CoverGirl is working on increasing body diversity.

Model Amy Deanna is their newest campaign model and she’s a model of color with vitiligo. The condition causes the skin to lose its natural shade, resulting in patches of light skin over the body. Canadian model and ANTM finalist Winnie Harlow also has vitiligo and throughout her successful career, she has used her platform to spread awareness about the condition.

It looks like Amy is doing the same as she’s featured in CoverGirl’s latest campaign. Using the TruBlend Liquid Makeup, Amy uses two different shades of the foundation, one to perfect her chin and the other to apply to the lighter areas under her eyes. She says, “Why try to blend in when you can choose how to stand out?”

In an Instagram post, Amy wrote, “Turns out we made history yesterday. I am the first person with Vitiligo to model for CoverGirl. To my vitiligo family, this is for us. Inclusion is the best way to bring awareness and educate. Thank you CoverGirl for this opportunity.”

In terms of skin diversity, the beauty and fashion industries have been inching their way towards progress. Albino model Diandra Forrest is landing major beauty gigs, and Fenty Beauty is making waves for its variety of light and dark shades. Vitiligo is something that not everyone knows about, but should. With models of diverse appearances in the media and in campaigns, we’re closer to getting rid of the norm and proving that we don’t need one.
