Being an intern is fun.

This is probably only the second time in my life I’ve worried about people actually liking me. The first was my first day of college. If you’re wondering why I didn’t say kindergarten, think back to your playtime-obsessed self, your mom doesn’t leave you saying, “Make lots of friends, honey.” No, she says “play nice with the other boys and girls” ‘cause she knows the only thing you actually give a damn about is making a beeline to the toys and staying put. Who cares about friends on the first day? You make them later, when someone has the same snack-pak as you, duh!

Come along for the ride and follow me through this column as I take on all that the city has in store for me. When you walk up and down Wall Street, it’s easy to believe that men clad in Thomas Pink attached to their Blackberries run this city. But take a note from Beyoncé and paint the town red (or pink) because girls? Yeah, we run the world and the town.

Tip #33 – Ladies’ Night really does exist. And it’s fabulous.

I was surprised to find out that a good number or bars and restaurants in the city still have ladies’ night drink specials. Sure, the feminist in me felt a little offended but the college girl on a budget (and unpaid internship) couldn’t help but be ecstatic. Ladies’ night isn’t exactly the best place to meet guys seeing as how there really aren’t many around so embrace it and grab your best girls to gossip or vent about work, your boyfriends, your mothers. A simple search on Yelp for “ladies’ night” will yield enough options to try out or check out the guide on Murphguide.com for specials listed by day. By now, most college students have started their jobs and internships for the summer. After the first-day jitters, paperwork and orientation, you’re probably starting to feel comfortable in the workplace. Don’t give way to bad habits with these typical intern mistakes and solutions:

Wardrobe Malfunctions
When your standard summer uniform consists of a worn-in pair of Levi cutoffs and beat-up gladiator sandals, transitioning into an intern-appropriate wardrobe can be a little difficult. If you’re not familiar with the ways of the working world, you may show up to work overdressed or under-dressed. Play it safe with office appropriate dresses and skirts while getting a feel for your office’s choice of couture.

No Questions/Ideas
You landed the interview, wooed your supervisor and got the offer for the internship. Now what? Impressing the higher-ups before beginning work is only half the battle. Don’t be surprised when you’re asked for ideas or input at work or in meetings.  If you’re too startled to come up with anything, remember this: you were chosen for the position for a reason. Get your shine on and come up with something!

Overspending
If you’re working in a big city, be prepared to shell out some dough. Your metro fare and lunch will run up a pretty large tab, especially in Manhattan. $9 for a sandwich? Crazy! Avoid the spend-shock and prepare a budget ahead of time.

School’s out for summer and the time of sun, relaxation and road trips has arrived. But chances are, like me, you also have a summer job or internship that requires you to spend long hours sitting at a desk. Even if you’ve gotten a good night’s sleep, a day of nothing but sitting can leave you feeling groggy and drowsy. And as every college girl knows, relying on coffee to wake you up can turn you into a jittery mess. It also adds up, because most of us buy our coffee much more often than we make it. So, in honor of all you working girls, here are a few tips to keep you feeling awake and energized throughout the day – whether you’re in a classroom or a cubicle.

1.     Start your day with movement and keep it going. When you first wake up, your body has been inactive for hours. If you roll out of bed, drag yourself to work and then sit for the whole day, it will take you a long time to fully wake up. So, when you get up in the morning, get out of bed and move! Jump up and down, or if you’re really ambitious, drop down and do a few push-ups or crunches. This seems like the last thing you’d want to do when your alarm has just gone off, but it works. Activating your muscles will cause blood to flow into them. This increased blood circulation will energize you from head to toe.

Move as much as possible throughout the day. Obviously, some work environments will allow more opportunities for this than others. Any chance you have to stand up and walk around, take it. Do you have a dog or a cat? If so, you’ve surely noticed how often they indulge in a nice stretch. Take a page out of your pet’s book! Stretching increases circulation, too. Stand up and reach your arms to the ceiling, like you do when you’ve just woken up. Or, as Lil Jon would say, bend over to the front and touch your toes! (Just not when any creepy coworkers can see you – this one might have to wait for lunch or bathroom breaks.)

As the curtain closes on another school year, we embrace the heat of summer. However, for many of us, summer may be short-lived, as we prepare to take on our roles as summer interns. The hard part is over (cover letters and resumes, buhh byee!), and now its time to have some fun and put together a kick-ass internship wardrobe.

Putting together a wardrobe can be intimidating. After all–you are a college student on a college budget. But don’t worry–stores like JCPenney, and Boscov’s offer dress-clothing brands in the Junior’s Department (such as Star City and A. Byer) that are totally affordable! And while building the perfect summer internship wardrobe depends on where you are interning and what the company dress code permits, there are some essentials that every girl should own.

Remember, when it comes to interning, you want to be both professional and practical. Avoid going overboard on the accessories; do you know how annoying it is to type all day with an arm full of bangles? Don’t wear anything that’s gonna keep you pulling and yanking and grabbing all day. And while you want to look good, a full-time internship is not the time to choose fashion over function. Heel blisters are no joke!

Now, get out there and rock the office, girl!

With summer coming (not soon enough), college students are busy pounding the pavement (or the whacking the web?) in order to find that amazing summer internship. Expectations high, most find themselves more than a tad disappointed when they discover their “dream gig” actually has them pushing pencils and delivering mail. (Yeah, not all internships are as amazing as mine at CollegeCandy.) But I have a feeling most of the people thinking that way are forgetting the purpose of internships…to get ahead! To make connections! To leave an amazing impression so the company hires you to do amazing things, or at least gives you a reference some other company can’t turn down.

NOT to hop online and publicly embarrass your boss because he or she is hard on you. Seems pretty obvious, right? Well, apparently it’s not because it happened. And since some young intern was dumb enough to do that, I thought maybe it was necessary to remind interns-to-be of a few other obvious things you SHOULD NOT DO NO MATTER HOW AWFUL YOUR BOSS OR HOW BORING YOUR INTERNSHIP IS.
