The Best of the Best Easter Treats

Happy Easter, College Candies!

I don’t know about you, but on a scale of early morning Church in panty hose to eternal bliss, Easter treats rank pretty freakin’ close to the top (and almost make putting on panty hose worth it). I’m not sure if it’s the pastel colors, the bunny shapes, or the peanut butter to chocolate ratio in those Reese’s eggs, but there’s just something special about the snacks that pop up this time of year.

And you know what’s even better? Getting to enjoy them without having to risk gaining the Freshman (or Sophomore/Junior/Senior/Super Senior/Depressed Grad) 15 with only a few weeks left in the school year. So I put the best of the best into this here gallery.

Enjoy.

Just don’t lick the screen; do you have any idea how hard that is to clean? (Note: I do. Don’t ask.)

How To Make Your Good Friday Great!

Today is Good Friday, which for many Christians means the a day to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. But that doesn’t mean the holiday is only for practicing Christians. Nope. Whether you’re celebrating the holiday for religious reasons or not, it’s a great reminder to turn your Good Friday into a GREAT FRIDAY. And let’s face it: with the spring semester quickly coming to a close, we all need a good 24 hours to just do something, anything, that doesn’t involve work or exams or extracurricular activities.

So here a few ideas to make those 24 hours blissful and entertaining!

1. Go on a reality TV binges
There’s really so much to choose from. Jersey Shore, My Life As Liz, or my personal favorite, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, or any other offshoot of that show that has to do with the Kardashians. (I simply love that family. They’re just too entertaining. It should be illegal…but I’m really glad it’s not.) There’s really nothing better than watching impossibly raunchy boys, a strong-willed indie redhead, or amazingly chic girls while lazing about on the couch with a bag of chips and a blanket. Nothing.

2. Check out a buy one, get one free at H&M
“Buy one get one,” “free,” and “sale” are three of my favorite phrases. They’re even better when they’re applied to stores I actually like shopping at! Like H&M, for example. Have you seen their spring line?! Gorgeous. Plus, they’re always having sales and discounts (and I’m sure they’re running an Easter sale today), so it’s hard not to feed into the shopping frenzy that leaves your wallet lighter and your hands heavier (bags don’t carry themselves, you know). Clothing is a necessity, after all! Read More »

Fashion Porn: Pastel Orgy

I spy with my little eye a whole lot of pastels.

And no, I’m not talking about those tasty Cadbury mini-eggs (even though I’ve got plenty of those too – they’re so cheap after Easter!).

Pastels reminiscent of the colors of everyone’s favorite chocolate Easter treat have made their way onto store shelves and I am excited!  Pale blues, pinks, yellows, greens, etc. have a way of lifting the spirits, like a warm spring breeze or the smell of flowers on your way to class.

I love how pastels are shamelessly girly and flirty, especially when found in the form of ruffled tops or floral prints. But what I love even more is how seamlessly they work with edgier pieces, adding a feminine flair without making you look too sweet.  With pastels appearing on accessories, in makeup routines (pastel nails are perfect for even the most conservative setting!), and on many, many other items of clothing, there is no excuse not to add a few dainty pieces to your spring wardrobe. Here are a few of my favorite pastel incarnations. Just looking at them makes me yearn for a beer and a patio.

WTF Friday: Evil Easter Bunny

I don’t celebrate Easter, so I’m not 100% sure what the bunny is all about. But he’s not supposed to eat puppies and instill fear in children (and fully grown website editors) around the world, right? Because I’m scared. That bunny’s got crazy eyes.

The CC Weekly Weigh In: It’s a Good Friday

Today is Good Friday and it is a Good Friday indeed. The sun is shining, the temperature is rising, and I’ve got a whole lot of Real Housewives and The Soup on my DVR just begging to be watched. In honor of the holiday (and the fact that the sun is putting me in a fantabulous mood!), I thought I’d have the CollegeCandy writers share what makes a Good Friday for them.

Personally, I haven’t really had a Good Friday since I was on the 4-day class schedule in college, but I guess knowing I won’t have to wake up at 6am tomorrow is as good as it’s gonna get out here in the real world. And that’s good enough for me.

Which Easter Candy Takes the Cake? [POLL]

Ever since we were little kiddies, we’ve enjoyed the little party extras that come along with Easter Sunday.  Yes, I am thinking about peeling back the wrapping of a gigantic, dense and chocolaty Easter bunny, and biting off its head.

The greatest thing about Easter is not the flowery dresses or the long church services (sorry God), but the array of tasty candies to choose from. But that is where the issue arises. As much as you may be tempted to do so, you can’t eat every single candy in the basket, at least in one sitting. Unless you have the metabolism of a hummingbird in flight and no little cousins who cry when you eat all the Peeps.

So the question is, which candy do you grab first?  Which candy makes you start your Easter countdown on Halloween? If given an Easter basket, WWJD?

Intro to Cooking: Marshmallows (and Peeps!)

Easter is here! Well, almost. For me, that means I can finally have coffee again after going without it all through Lent. I don’t even drink that much—maybe a couple of cups per week—but I am seriously going insane over here without it. Whenever I walk into a coffee shop, I inhale that deep, heady scent and realize that I have to order tea or chai or a steamer instead. You can bet that I’m going to have a pot on as soon as Easter morning rolls around.

Besides indulging in Lent-withdrawn pleasures, one of other great things about Easter is Peeps. Honestly, they don’t even taste that good, but those little, tennis-ball-colored marshmallow chickies are endlessly fascinating to me. Put one in the microwave, and it balloons to the size of a basketball. Stick one to the wall, and it will still taste fine three years later. Now that’s something not every food can boast.

If you’re the DIY type, I guarantee that homemade marshmallows won’t let you down. They’re a tad involved, but they taste about one million times better than store-bought, and you can use them to make Peep shapes and cover them with colored sugar. Oh, and they are gorgeous. See what I mean? You will need a stand mixer or electric mixer for these, so if you’re on Spring Break, use your mother’s.

The Weekly Ten: Spring is in the Air

Did anyone else get a sunburn from the ridiculous weather this weekend? I’m pretty sure this was the first time I was excited to be rubbing aloe on my aching, burning skin after the treacherous winter that we’ve been put through this year. New York, I’m looking at you.

Yesterday was the official first day of spring, but other than the calendar telling us it was so, here are the top ten signs you know spring is here.

10. Booty shorts. Every. Where.
In the winter, all the tarty outfits go into hiding, but the second the weather gets above 60, you can bet your campus is littered with cut offs and short skirts.

9. Ice cream!
Finally slightly more acceptable to eat for breakfast. Kinda.

8. PDA galore
There’s something about the warm weather that makes couples just pop up everywhere, holding hands, sticking hands in one another’s pockets, making kissy faces, sitting on laps and being disgustingly mushy in public. Read More »

In The Know: Southwest Is Having a Sale!

I have a very serious boyfriend.

He may give me peanuts instead of flowers and he probably doesn’t enjoy the fact that I blare Backstreet Boys and the Glee soundtrack for hours at a time, but I’d say we are pretty committed.

And if the “check bags free” wasn’t enough to make Southwest Airlines my perma-beau, this new sale (which ends tomorrow so PAY ATTENTION) made me swoon with delight.

Southwest is currently offering fares as low as $39 each way (excluding Friday and Sunday travel) to their many destinations. And you can book any trip between now and May 25th, which, as you all know, includes SPRING BREAK, baby! Didn’t think you’d be able to get somewhere warm for a little R&R (or GTL) this year? Well thanks to my boyf, that a pina-colada-fest is totally do-able. (And hopefully the bar tender serving it will be as well. Count it!) Read More »

Weekly Wrap Up: Spring Stress

tired_baby-whew.jpgFor most of us, it’s the first week back from the Easter/Passover break, which, while relaxing, can also be stressful.  Some of us found that being home for the holidays has its ups and downs, such as being able to eat yummy home cookin’ but also having to deal with our mom asking us to help her edit her Facebook profile (which reminded me to delete those suggestive pictures from last year’s Halloween party before I got an angry phone call from her).  For others of us, this break was a time to meet our new boyfriend’s parents for the first time (and worry about making a good impression).

All that stress has probably caused you to break out, which only causes you to stress more about the nasty bumps on your face and find a way to get rid of them—which doesn’t exist for that pesky mutant acne that’s everywhere now.

I know all this makes you feel like crying, but before you run out and rent some guaranteed tear jerkers and sit at home all weekend watching them while eating a whole tub of Häagen-Dazs®, think about all the great stuff that happened this week that’s sure to cheer you up.

Instead of crying, call up everyone you know and go out tonight!  If you think you have nothing to wear, maybe you can dress up that black T-shirt hanging in the back of your closet in a new way.  Or grab your girlfriends for a shopping trip to spend your tax refund!  You could splurge on a great new tote, or get more for your money with cute new stuff from Target.

Still feel like staying in?  At least do something that will perk you up.  Search the internet for some great new music, make a bet to lose weight before summer officially hits, or laugh at some hilarious Yahoo! Answers questions. The semester coming to an end and papers and final exams looming in the not-so-distant future can only add to the stress you’re already feeling. But cheer up: summer’s almost here!
