CollegeCandy Book Club: February Pick

Hello all you fabulous bookworms! I’m here to happily announce the CC Book Club’s pick for the fine month of February. My birthday is this month (the 11th!), so I’ve always loved February and wanted to give it a really good book. On my last post about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (January’s choice), someone suggested that we read Mindy Kaling’s “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” I’ve seen the book and heard great things, so I figured why not? With mid-terms kicking into high gear, I think we could all find solace in a hilarious read. It’s also considering shorter than our last pick, and at only 240 pages, shouldn’t take too long to plow through. It’s available from Amazon.com here for $16.50.

We’ll rendezvous here again on February 25th to discuss what liked and what we didn’t like about “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?”, as well as throw around picks for March. Can’t wait to hear/see your thoughts! Read More »

Mindy Kaling TwitPics EXPOSED! [Photos]

Flying high on the release of her new book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, we thought we’d share some of the reasons why Mindy Kaling is one of our favorite Hollywood funny girls.

Number one reason to love her: She tweets and tumbls about her favorite affordable products. When was the last time someone in Hollywood actually decided to give a damn about what us common folk like. Number two reason: She’s on The Office, which is probably the only television show that has consistently made me laugh. Number three reason to like her? She loves Beyonce. I love Beyonce. If she can like what I like then hell, I might as well try to marry this girl.

But if that’s not enough to convince you just how awesome Mindy is, we went through her twitpics and pulled out the top ten photos that show off just how fabulous and fun Mindy is! Read More »

Now Showing: No Strings Attached

When I groaned after No Strings Attached ended, my friend turned to me and said, “If you hate romance, don’t go see romantic comedies!” And those who have read my reviews before probably already know that I’m not a sucker for romance. So you would think that I might enjoy a comedy about platonic sex buddies Emma and Adam (played by Nathalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher). They have their simple romance-free rules, just in case they start falling for each other. But as we all know, in the world of romantic comedies, rules are made to be broken. Corny jokes and unrealistic situations ensue.

Portman and Kutcher are beautiful people, no one can deny that. It’s not hard to watch them on screen. But after seeing Portman’s work in Black Swan, there’s just no comparison. She is capable of challenging herself as an actress, but No Strings Attached is the kind of movie that comes out a hundred times in a year. A girl with commitment issues “unexpectedly” reveals that her heart isn’t made of stone. Not completely original. I’m not yet convinced that Kutcher can take on tougher roles than the cute, flawless love interest, but he owes it to himself to at least try something new. Read More »

Emmy Fashion: The Good, The Bad and The WTF

The big tragedy of moving back into my apartment today was realizing that since I decided to save money by nixing the cable TV, I could not watch the Emmy Red Carpet show. It was traumatic. Watching the stars arrive and chat with Ryan Seacrest, Giuliana Rancic and the other annoying people they usually bring in is the highlight of my night and way more exciting than watching people ramble off a list of thank yous before they are kindly escorted off the stage.

Though, to be fair, Jimmy Fallon did have some really good moments.

Anyways, thank god for the Internet, right? I spent the evening scouring the World Wide Web to find out what all my favorite TV stars were wearing to the big event. And, much like Modern Family’s “Best Comedy Series” win, I wasn’t surprised to see a lot of good, a lot of bad and some major WTF. Read More »

A Website I Found That I Love

kelly-kapor-mindy-kaling-120423_751_1024.jpgLike most normal humans between the ages of 12 and 70, I love The Office. And, like most American women between the ages of 6 and 800, I love shopping. And clothes. And pretty things of all sorts. Put all these delightful things together, and you have my new favorite blog of all time!

Well, it’s not new, but it’s new to me, and I am totes obsessed with it. This magical blog? Things I Bought That I Love written by none other than Kelly from The Office, Mindy Kaling.

And yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. Its tagline: “A place to discuss things we’ve bought that are frivolous and fun.” From sour candies to adorable flat (thank you!) shoes, it’s literally anything lovely and mentionable that has crossed Mindy’s path.

Not only does she have awesome, interesting taste, she is also (hello!) a comedy writer, so the whole thing is just one big ball of adorable hilarious-ness. I love that I can read it and hear the words coming straight out of Kelly’s be-lipglossed mouth. But even the flaky, flippy, Kelly-esque tone she sometimes employs can’t mask the fact that she’s hella (shut up, I’m from the West Coast) smart. Her writing is sharp, and her suggestions are not only cutesy and fashionable, they’re actually realistic and useful! Like, you could use them in your real life. For real.

My recent favorite? Her suggestion for Hue by Tracy Reese tights which came about when she came across the “I love dresses, but hate when my knees get frostbite” dilemma we all face from time to time. Thanks, Mindy!

The only downside? Oh right, turns out Mindy is also an actor and writer for a hit television show, so sometimes she can’t post as much as I’d like. But when she does, it is so worth waiting for. She’s clever, she’s candid, and best of all, she cracks me the eff up. Keep on keepin on, Kaling!
